Show Sportsmanship Criticized The following' paragraphs were .written by a visitor of the Granite-South game from Idaho. "I have seen and played in games in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming, but I've never seen such a show of poor sportsmanship as was displayed at the South-Granite game last week. Not the teams, but on the part of the crowds in the grandstand. grand-stand. First; there was that screaming when a mem-i mem-i ber of the opposing team tried for a foul shot. After all, when a fellow has been fouled and given the chance if or- a free throw, he is plenty nervous knowing that the point depends on him and him alone, without all of the terrible noise. Maybe it seems strange but in Idaho you go to a basketball game to see which team is the best, not to see which side can make a team member so nervous that he doesn't play as well as he would otherwise. Second: the yelling at the decision of a referee ref-eree was pretty poor sportsmanship. A referee's job is hectic enough without that, and besides, what good does it do? Last but not least was the complete lack of courtesy South and only South showed when as Granite stood up and sang its school song, not a soul in South's bleachers made a move. The strange thing about it is that when South sang their's, every person on Granite's side rose to his feet. A team, no matter how good it is, actually represents only the athletic department. It's the people on the stands that show the kind of a school they come from." |
