Show WEEKLY REFLEX-D- A VIS NEWS JOURNAL, AUGUST 25, 1977 Farnsworth Const. Wins In Softball Tournament By DAVE WIGHAM This past weekend at the Bountiful City Park the Ron Farnsworth Construction softball team won the Regional Title and a trip back to the national tournament m September. WITH the win the local club, out of Salt Lake City, will journey to Cleveland, Ohio. The national event will be held from September 1 By DAVE WIGHAM All of the local high schools in the area have had their share of brother acts go through their athletic programs. Layton has had the Lee and Nelson brothers, Clearfield has had the Gardner and Johnson doubles, Bountiful has had the Davies and Green boys in their halls. PROBABLY one of the most memorable brother acts to go through the Davis County school system would have to be the Nelson brothers who played ball at Viewmont. Play ball would be an understatement, all three were involved in the varsity baseball program for the Vikes their entire high school career. All of them were in the football and basketball programs at least two varsity seasons. TWO OF the brothers went directly to Brigham Young University to play baseball out of high school, Dave and Kim. Clyde, the third member of this famous trio, took the junior college route and played for Ricks College before enrolling at the Y. I had a chance to talk to their mother the other day and find out what they are all doing this summer and coming year. A prouder mother never existed than Mrs. Nelson who has probably seen as many ball games as any parent until the 5th. Several local players are on the squad. Bill Lugo is the catcher and one of the power hitters on the club. Clyde Nelson is the shortstop, Dave Nelson is the third baseman and Kim Nelson is used when he is available. DURING the double elimination tournament held at the City Park the Farnsworth team breezed through till the finals on Sunday night with impressive victories over teams from Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. The final game saw Farnsworth going head to head with Ensign Homes of Salt Lake City. Early in Sunday morning action these two were the only undefeated teams left. Farnsworth handed the Ensign group their first loss. The Ensign team then won a couple of games to earn the right to play Farnsworth in the final. in history. DAVE AND Clyde are playing slow pitch softball for the Ron Farnsworth team, the team that finished second in the big Pioneer Day tournament. Both are enjoying good years with the club. Dave returns this fall to Utah Technical College in Provo as the head baseball coach. Dave has turned that program into a winner since he took over the job a couple of years ago. His clan is always near the top of the 1CAC 4 worth twice. In the opening game they did beat them which set up the need for the title event. At this time it ap- peared that Ensign had the momentum needed to win. Farnsworth was not to be denied, however, as they came back in the last game to In the two previous win 10-games Ensign had scored an average of 20 runs, so limiting them to just 2 was a great feat for Farnsworth. All-St- ELSEWHERE in the fast pitch tournament held in Salt Lake City, another local c won the right squad to playoff with another regional winner next week from Salt Lake City. Ken Hackmeister is the SANDWICHED inbetween their athletic careers, Dave and Clyde fulfilled missions for the LDS Church, and the possibility of Kim going after college isnt out of the Tri-Ar- . question either. Although many brother acts have excelled in high school, very few can say that three brothers did so well in college as well. catcher DIXON P. BOUNTIFUL city recreatpeople decided to form a league of their own inviting these teams, along with several others, that were on the list to play in the Monday night league. That league is just winding down its season and a good one it was for a rookie league. Six teams were entered, five from the county area and one from Salt Lake City. ional 12 Free Personalized Pencils with 5 Purchase Perfect for Back to Schoolers! 12 Pencils Imprinted for $1.00 If purchased separately 1 week watt on orders, tion. The Darts lost almost everyone from last years club while the Lancers have some of their top players returning. It seems like every year the Darts have to rebuild, and every year they seem to do it. Utah CLEARFIELD has a new coach, the players and the staff are still trying to get to know one another. Still a question mark at this time is the playing status of Brian Johnson. Some say he wont play at all, others say he will play just on offense. Certainly a key to the Falcon season would be his status, but without him the club still has a lot of talented players who could make things rough on opposing teams.
