Show TERRIFIC STORMS many states experience tornado weather chicago may 29 sanco last friday the states of nebraska south dakota iowa wisconsin minnesota and northern illinois have experienced a series of the most violent storms known in years resulting in the loss of nearly a dozen lives and doing damage to property and crops that will run into the hundreds of thousands in the states ot nebraska south dakota and iowa tornadoes the real old fashioned twister kind have laid waste large sections of the country converting hundreds of farm houses and buildings into kindling wood killing stock and tearing up trees like so many weeds at least six tornadoes of greater or less intensity have been reported since friday in many other sections violent wind rain and hail accompanied by terrific lightning and thunder have been experienced yesterday tornadoes were reported from hastings central city and beatrice neb dows mango fonda and tama iowa and bijou hills south dakota at the latter place seven lives were lost and two fatally injured near keswick iowa five persons were injured one fatally hundreds of window ibanes in beatrice and hastings neb were broken by hall while vegetation was ruined and hundreds of birds were killed in hamilton county neb damage was done by wind but no lives were lost the state of michigan was also swept yesterday by a severe electrical storm many houses in st joseph and benton harbor and vicinity being struck by lightning at Water vleit alch an unknown man was killed by lightning A violent storm broke over chicago late last night which flooded the city and suburbs causing much damage to n the rain fell in floods and the electrical display was unusually vivid trees were blown down all over the city and the suburbs the damage of this kind being especially noticeable in hyde park and austin the streets and basements in the down town district and evanston were flooded A number of houses were struck by lightning |
