Show NOT A TIME FOR ISMS no one questions ques tlona the present period ot of depression yet it Is not a new development in economics since history began there have been periods 0 of f inflation followed by those of oc deflation fla tion in spite ot of all modern legislation lation theories research and plans tho the centuries old laws ot at supply and demand continue to exert themselves A shortage in the supply means higher r prices higher prices are a stimulus to production A stimulated production soon meets the shortage consumption 81 cannot be increased beyond a certain extent soon there thera is a large surplus money becomes scarce A period ot of depression exists all these steps were recently taken during durine and after the war sources of 0 sup supply ply in europe were crippled A large demand was created tor for american P products ro ducts factories were doubled and redoubled prices soared and practically everyone was endowed with plenty then the con editions in europe were restored to normal consumption in this country could not be further increased there existed a decreasing demand tin an increasing supply As a result the present depression in retrospect it appears surprising that very few during prosperity tor for saw the likelihood of a change in conditions or made any preparation tor for a rainy day the majority went ahead spending beyond their means living from day to day with perfect assurance that such prosperity would continue forever for them there appeared no tomorrow to be prepared for but like grasshoppers they sang and frolicked in the sunshine of plenty planty with no thought ot of a possible winter many suffer during the present times and the deprivation seems doubly difficult after having experienced a time of at comparative ease case though there Is no doubt that the times are hard it Is wondered it the reports are not exaggerated to a certain extent it appears forgotten that there has always existed a certain amount of unemployment there was never a time when there were not some who were more fortunate than others in the possession of at worldly goods one of the real dangers of the pres ent period la Is that many will be carried to extremes by present conditions and bo be brought to accept unsound theories certain organizations rep ing advantage of conditions to spread resenting sinister influences are tak their propaganda and make converts to their cause an example ot of one that has como come within the sphere of such influence Is evidenced by a letter recently received in this office the writer for some time had been conducting an unsuccessful bearc search 11 i f tor employment lie ile writes of his bla contemplated tem plated platea return to his leome 1 I will be passed by large automobiles driven by men who through greed are in part responsible tor for my present plight men who have not been necessary tu to ther production of things of life I 1 will bo be in towns that have as officials those whose positions and luxuries are tho the products of blood money which they have sucked like vampires from the life work of producers under such conditions lie be continues it if bolshevism or any other oiher kind ot at ism presents itself and offers relief what ahat would bo be the natural effect on me now allow me ma to say in the voice of millions of loo per cent americans americana who are hungry that russian bolshevism la Is not the worst ors me denaco menaco nace we have in our midst but ut americans who propagate and sponsor a system that makes millionaires and paupers haupers out of american citizens through the same process of industry danish banish the vampires or at industry the gangsters of the stock markets the blood suckers of our treasury give to the producer a more equitable portion of lils his product give him a c hance chance to surround himself with a security that assures him the necessities Is of life with sufficient leisure and luxuries compensate him for his productive ability and bolshevism will vill find no place in his ilfe life and thinking it Is not wished to criticize the writer of the letter quoted ite he was merely quoting the possible thoughts of a hungry man and stated th that at lie he did not yet subscribe to those views nor is it very hard to guess th the to origin of such expressions similar propaganda Is being poured forth by paid foreign agents throughout the country with but ono one thought in mind the disruption of the american government they are envious of at this the most fortunate of all nations and long for the opportunity to ex exploit plait its riches with lurid adjectives they draw distorted pictures of conditions in this country and attempt to excite the use of force to aid their ends by awakening Sk ening greed and avarice in the minds ind s of men do they give logical reasons why conditions would be better under the systems they urge can they point to russia with its bread lines forced labor and unrest and truthfully show that the working man there is living in ease and luxury can they explain the want ond and poverty of that country Is it desirable to be summarily evicted from ones ono S home to have onn ones goods ta taken ken without any compensation to live lire herded beaded together in ham like ike structures to have someone e else ise dictate what one no may wear eat or own I 1 admitted that in this country during the present depression there are instances where men who are willing and able to work suf suffer ter from lack 0 of f employment nut but they do not bear the burden alone the examples are arc just as many where former employers are in want last year there were 1345 bank failures and business failures employers lost rot not only the lack of an ly to work hut but their business which ofton tile the faults of 0 years rat ct labor ane oui Pl oer usually referee ref orid lo 10 0 o in unco irp terms by agia aviators tors eldom 0 ocies oc eles ies a bed of rojos ge grierel Y after the employees day is over the ho employer must lay aw ile wondering and worrying how bills are to be met and an d the busan ss kept going it is the employer of labor rather than the laborer who is nit often derivi di ir n to lo suicide as aa a means oi of escape from worry it Is true that there thera are ara those who have ani amassed assed fortunes hut but it was generally by saying savins while others spent by denying themselves luxuries anil and ense ease by working while others slept and by being always ready to talco take advantage of opportunities the solution 0 of this count rys problem does not lie by way ot of revolution A betterment of conditions will not be attained by the adoption of 0 isms iams and the radical doctrines of foreign agitators it Is time when cooperation between labor and capital Is needed for the benefit of both it Is time tor or peacefully pulling together to bring about a solution of economic problems exchange |
