If the hi' i - , company rehearses here, we will have a little mid summer treat of our own week after neAt vtf J ktf During a recent engagement in Pittsburg Miss Sarah Truax who is to succeed Viola Allen as Roma in "The Eternal City" and who is remembered remem-bered as a member of the first Giiffen-Neiil Giiffen-Neiil company, was persuaded to cieate a part in a cuitain raiser, wiitten by Samuel Sam-uel Haulen Church of Pittsburg for tho express purpose of giving Miss Truax's emotional powers a supreme test. The play was a monologue, the plot showing the estrangement between a husband hus-band and wife and, through mistaken causes, the discovery by the wife ot her error, jus at the moment mo-ment that word had been brought to her of her husband's departure, with an intention to commit suicide. The artistic work of Miss Truax on the occasion, the local press declared, was marvelous, and so complete was the triumph that, through professional channels, the news speedily sped all over the country and in the investigation which resulted, it is said, George C. Tyler, who had offered of-fered Olga Nethersole $1,200 a week to take up the role of Roma, was persuaded to engage Miss Truax to appear in the part. v i&v 5 A notable performance of "The Merchant of Venice" wil be given in London this week in behalf be-half of the Actors' association. Sir Henry Irving will once more be Shylock (his only appearance in a Shakespeaiean part in London this year); Ellen Terry, Portia; George Alexander, Bassanio; J. H. Barnes, the Duke of Venice; Charles Warner, Antonio; An-tonio; Oscar Asche, the Prince of Moroco; Ben Webster, Gratiano; Martin Harvey, Lorenzo; Norman Nor-man Forbes, Launcelot Gobbo, and Evelyn Millard, Mil-lard, Jessica. Minor parts will be assumed by H. B. Irving, Herbert Waring, Cyril Maude, Lionel Biough, Seymour Hicks, Edward Terry, Dion Boucicault and Lily Brayton. 5 to The stage manager of the Tivoli opera company com-pany in San Francisco says this thing of marrying marry-ing into the chorus must stop or the coast "merry merry" will be reduced to the dimensions of a Balkan standing army. The latest capture In that of Frances Gibson, who has left the chorus to sign a matrimonial contract with one, Walter Bownes, a wealthy cattleman of Colorado. Mr. Bownes met Miss Gibson a few weeks ago. After the introduction he said: "Miss Gibson, may I ask you a question?" "A thousand ir you wish," said the young woman. wo-man. "Will you marry me?" asked Mr. Bownes. "Certainly," said Miss Gibson. ' & & g There are six new theatres being completed in New York, but not one of them will be opened on schedule time, because of labor troubles. trou-bles. This will necessitate many of the best companies com-panies opening their seasons in "the1' provinces," and probably means that there will be several very good attractions in outside cities. |
