The mill was transported from Hawthorne to Montrose, Colorado on 11 standard railroad cars from which point 22 narrow gauge rail cars carried the mill to the present site. Frank Mitchell, company superintendent was in charge of the dismantling and reassembling. Silver Shield holds a ten-ye- ar lease with extension provisions, on the Waunaka mill rite which is' located some three miles north of Ouray on the Gunnison River. The railway and highway are in the Immediate vicinity. In addition, the company has an estimated 600,-0- 00 tons of ore under option that was mined during the early days of the district Under the then prevailing conditions, only the high grade was shipped due to transportation difficulties And low metal prices. A complete examination has been made of these ores by Silver Shield engineers that is said to reflect a profitable operation under present conditions and with modern facilities and methods. Values are in lead, zinc and silver. The company is also anticipating a milling program for gold ores from the Waunaka claims which are located across the highway from the millrite. A unique feature of this property is the fact that it boasts one of the highest tramways in the country. Silver Shield, the operating company, will work on a basis of 55 per cent of the net returns with the remaining portion being equally divided between the Lucky Boy Cons. Mining Company and the Champion City Mining Company. In addition to these operations. it is announced that Silver Shield has recently obtained an option on the Mountain Top mine which adjoins other company holdings in the Humboldt Basin area. This property is said to have been a major producer of high grade ores in foe past. It is reported that company plans include foe opening of this property for development following completion of foe mill assembling and inauguration of milling operations on now available ores.
