Show HOMETOWN NEWS Stic Papon (EtjnimtU Mountain View Hospital Wednesday, August 18, 1982, page 5 HEALTH CARE CORNER DOG BITES five years old and that german shepherds, shepherd mixes and mixed breeds weighing over 30 pounds accounted for 30 percent of the bites. The biting dog was usually owned by a neighbor or by the family. Stray dogs were seldom involved in attacks on children, contrary to popular parent beliefs. To reduce the risk of dog bites, small children should always be supervised when they are around dogs, including family pets, and that dog owners act responsibly toward their neighbors by not keeping aggressive dogs in residential areas. The study recommends that parents use good judgment in the purchase and choice of a pet, deferring the purchase until children are old enough to be trusted not to provoke their pet either deliberately or by innocent activities that might be seen as threatening by a dog. bites severe enough to result in bruises, punctures or' cuts are among the most common serious childhood accidents. According to a Denver pediatric survey of 455 families, 194 of the 960 children had been bitten by a dog. The study group found that 43 percent of the children had been seen by a physician and that 16 percent of those needed stitches. Although the exact number of dog bites is unknown - because of a lack of reporting - the U.S. Public Health Service has estimated that as many as a million bites occur annually in the U. S. Dogs are responsible for 85 percent of al animal bites in the country. The( majority of victims are children, jj Dog -- The study reported that more victims were under than half of 10 to 15 te Utah County Fair Parade the largest number of entries in the parade has been 44, he said, but the parade committee expects there will be more than 60 entries Jeffrey R.
