Although sn anomaly to go to tha primitive savages of Australia for points on an airplane, that was Just what was done In the development of flying In the air by humans. The fundamental principle of the plane Is both old and simple, having been discovered by the bushmen of the antipodes and embodied by them In the boomerang, which by meeting in Its flight the air st a slight angle got a "lift" The trajectory of the boomerang may be In part horizontal or may even rise as a result of this lift. Any surface that is more or less flat that travels at a slight angle through the air tends to lift If the section has a slight camber, or tonvex curve, the lift Is increased. Better results are obtained If a body of appreciable thickness Is used instead of a thin sheet These points the Australian discovered. Investigation will show little difference between the wing section of the modern airplane and a cross section of a boomerang made by the bushmen or whittled by a New York boy after he had visited the circus and had witnessed the stunts of the boomerang throwers. The resemblance of the boomerang's cross section Is closer to a propeller section of an airplane, as a boomerang Is a sort of cross between an airplane wing and a propeller. WOOD LASTS FOR CENTURIES Oak Burled In Water or Wet Sand Has Proved to Be Practically Indestructible. Men employed In drlvlne a new ral- lery In a gold mine at Charlotte Plains, In victoria, Australia, have made an astonishing discovery. At a depth of 300 feet below ground they have come upon pieces of timber perfectly preserved, which have every appearance of having been sawed and shaped by the hand of man. This timber lies In the bed of an ancient river now being worked for gold, and the timber Is oak. Now, oak has the peculiar property of lasting for centuries when burled In water or wet sand. Oak piles have been taken out from under old wooden bridges constructed by the Romans, and found as sound as when they were put there, nearly 2,000 years ago! Oak, known as bog oak, Is found burled In Irish peat bogs, and Is perfectly black, Intensely hard, and very valuable. Just before the world's war It was discovered that the bed of the river Moksha, in Russia, for a length of over 400 miles, Is simply full of magnificent old oak trees bedded In sand. The river is shallow, and broad, and the oak can easily be raised. Smaller deposits are found In England. There is a pool In the river Dart, known from time Immemorial as Oak pool. In the bottom of which are masses of fine old oak. The strange thing Is that there are no oak trees near the spot at present Vast Waste Desert. The great Sahara desert covers tha major part of northern Africa, consisting of 8,500,000 square miles an arid region as large as the whole of Europe. From 100 feet below sea level It rises In one instance to 8,000 feet above, and some of Its elevations are covered with snow for three months of the year. Most of It however, Is a dry, snndy waste, dotted here and there with an oasis where "drink" may be secured. The winds are all very hot and dry, while rain is almost unknown. Paying Federal Officials. The president of the United States Is paid by settlement warrant, which Is practically the same as a check. This warrant is sent to hlra by messenger from the treasury twice a month. .Senators and representatives are paid either by check or cash as they personally desire through congressional disbursement checks. When they are paid in cash they receive crisp, new Mils, as does nearly every one who lives in Washington. Lost a Husband. "Maud Is a victim of the stock mar- ket." Application of the Uintah Railroad company for permission to increase its wagon rates for hauling freight from Watson to various cities of the Uintah basin has been granted by the public utilities commission of Utah. Abe Majors, who was pardoned sev eral months ago from the Utah state prison, after having served a portion of a life sentence for the murder of Captain William Brown of the Ogden police force, has been convicted of burglary at Los Angeles. Alleging that he was permanently injured at Cache Junction while serv- ng as a brakeman and that such in juries resulted from the negligence of his employers, Graham G. Meadville is suing the Oregon Short Line for $12,000 punitive damages. Right of the city commission to de fine the residential districts of Salt Lake and to enact ordinances that will prevent the erection of buildings for the installation of industries that property owners maintain are a nuisance has been upheld by the supreme court.
