ANALYZE TWS: 3 Stars. This slick and rambunctious Harold Ramis comedy De Niro as a Mafia boss suffering from panic attacks and Billy Crystal as the hip young New Yorker who becomes Ims personal psychotherapist -is smart fcmny and seems to have everything going for ft. Still, there are little chinks and script flaws m its comic armor, just as there are neuroses boiling under the Cosa Nostra coot of De Niros twitchy Paul Vitti. Crystal and De Niro are often delight working together: so are - with Robert SALT LAKE CITY Six of fhe world's top young piano are performing in Salt , players on Saturday. t tiLake City The six winners of the 1999 ,,Gina Bachauer Young Artists International Piano , Competition will perform in a . , free concert at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Assembly Hall .,;,ttn Temple Square. AUSTIN POWERS: THE SPY WHO SHAGGED ME 3 stars. Mike Myers' irrev- erently reverent spoof of James Bond films and other '60s velvet'n'vinyl culture is a sequel to his 1997 surprise hit and is just as endearingly silly. With Heather Graham. PG13 (bathroom humor, raunch. sexual innuendo) . BABY GENIUSES. This car crash of a film, directed by Bob "Porkys Clark, is so bad on so many levels that it's difficult to decide what to address first Should we start with the concept, about an evil corporation named BABYCO. led by a fascists doctor named Kinder, that is conducting questionable experimentation on very young children, especially twins? Should I go right to the structure, which borrows the talking babies idea from "Look Who's Talking" it and mixes with the mischievous antics of "Home Alone," so that we have bad guys getting their comeuppance at the hands of cackling genius babies? The most notable emotion one is left with is sorrow that such stalwart actors as Kathleen Turner, Peter MacNicol, Kim Cattrall and the great Ruby Dee found their way into this bomb. PG. Zero stars. BIG DADDY. Adam Sandler plays an unemployed grad who tries to demonstrate his maturity to his girlfriend (Kristy Swanson) by adopting a boy. Aside from one funny bit, most of the time Sandler just mopes around like a . g slacker. stars. THE CASTLE. A cleverly written Australian comedy about an eternal optimist (Michael Caton) who won't let the powers-that-b- e take away his dream house, which is in reality an environmental disaster. The numerous details on the perimeter turn this pleasant little jaunt into a grand comic adventure. R. 3 stars. FOOLISH. Laziness allowed this mess to pass up an opportunity for an entertaining, enlightening look into the life of a rising standup comic. Rapper Master P ("I Got the Hookup") is crimia one-not- e as a suave small-tim- e nal trying to boost the career of his comedian brother (a crude Eddie Griffin from UPN's "Malcolm & Eddie"). R. 1 star FORCES OF NATURE. Sandra Bullock is paired with Ben Affleck in this romantic comedy of modest inten- lj,.m. ir The festival will end Saturday night with the concert presented by the young tions and lesser results. He's an uptight New Yorker on his way to Georgia to wed girlfriend Bridget (Maura Tierney). He's distracted by Bullock's kooky and comely international pianists. For more information call - the Bachauer Office at (801) travail is character, and their orvthe-roa- d contrived and plentiful, including a near plane crash: getting arrested; getting rained and hailed on; having to take their clothes off; dancing for money at a gay bar; hooking up with a bunch of seniors on a bus tour. The stars make a most unlikely pair, and unlikable as well, sorts leading and likely to ever lead their lives on the most emotionally superficial levels. Bad tnp. PG-1One star. THE GENERAL'S DAUGHTER. John Travolta and Madeleine Stowe star as an intrepid warrant officer and his hard-nosepartner m an expensive looking new detective thriller that should have been much better. "The General's Daughter" is a big. lurid murder-mystermovie about sexual sleaze in the U.S. Army. R. 2 stars. 60. 3 stars. This movie is an invigorating piece of filmmaking with its fractured chronology, plots that swerve like and a beat-happhighspeed spin-out- s soundtrack that for once, actually propels the action rather than just serving as an advertisement for itself. Whether the movie adds any thought or positive energy to the world is another matter. First-tim- e screenwriter John August's clever jigsaw puzzle of a plot involves a supermarket clerk serving as a fill-i- n drug supplier (Sarah Polley), four pals seeking sex and finding trouble in Las Vegas, and two TV stars (Jay Mohr and Scott Wolf) involved in a drug sting operation. Director Doug Liman ("Swingers") confirms his feel for the aimless energy of young, Los Angelinos, but everything takes place in a moral vacuum. Enjoy the buzz; beware of the aftertaste. R. IDLE HANDS. When a teenage hand becomes possessed by the devil, he goes on a killing rampage that wipes out his parents, classmates and best friends. Lame comedy ensues as he chops off the offending hand and then tries to kill it before it takes his girlfriend to hell. Think of it as a bad, really hybrid of "Cheech & Chong" meets "Scream." R. One star. INSTINCT 2 stars The title suggests suspenseful action, perhaps born of primitive passions. The movie, on the other hand, goes strictly by the Screenwriting 101 rulebook. Instinct is part "Gorillas in the Mist," part "Silence of the Lambs" and part "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest." That's a high-bropedigree, but "Instinct" is a poor relation. This predictable portentous film has primatologist Ethan Powell (Anthony Hopkins) incarcerated for committing murders at his retreat in the jungles of Rwanda. Although Dr. Powell isn't nearly as much fun as "The Silence of the Lambs' " Hannibal Lecter, every moviegoer knows that Sir Anthony can be a seductive madman. So when upwardly mobile psychiatrist Theo Caulder (Cuba Gooding Jr.) is assigned to study the prized convict's case, you know they're going to bond. Rated R (violence, language) LIFE 3 stars. Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence play a pair of bad-luc- k characters thrown together by chance and thrown in jail for a murder they didn't commit. It's an odd but surprisingly successful mix of comedy, pathos and PG-1- ncm THE MUMMY. A lavish Universal Pictures remake of the studio's 1932 Boris Karloff horror classic. But it packs so much action, gorgeous g Moroccan scenery and Industrial Light and Magic visual effects into its two hours that after a while. I began to get tired of it. Sometimes a movie is just too big, loud and fast for its own good. P&13. 2 12 stars. I stars. R (profanity, racial epithets) LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL: 3 stars. This film finds bittersweet humor in the midst of the holocaust. Set in wartime Italy writerdirectorstar Roberto Benigni is sent to a concentration camp. To keep his son happy and innocent, Benigni pretends it's all a game, in which the uniforms are costumes and the menial jobs are contests to try to accrue enough , for points to get released. Rated: scenes of wartime horror and a little rough language THE MATRIX. 3 stars. This extrava- gantly designed, futuristic thriller was made by the brotherly writing-directinteam of Larry and Andy Wachowski, whose previous film was the lesbians-and-gun- s indie caper movie "Bound." It's a change of pace, with overwhelming visuals and big ideas regarding What Is Reality, yet even as it overreaches for profundity, "The Matrix" sports intelligence and style . Keanu Reeves, in his persona, stars as intelligent blank-slat- e the computer-savvNeo, who's recruited to thwart a conspiracy that keeps the world's population living in an electronically created virtual reality. Laurence Fishburne is fine as good-gumythical leader Morpheus, but the plum performances are from Australian actor Hugo Weaving as a droll evil "agent" and Carrie-Ann- e Moss as an agile, stoic heroine who knows how to somersault downstairs with a gun. Some ideas are provocative, others recycled, but you can always turn your brain off and just enjoy trippi-nes- s the "Alice in Wonderland g martial arts battles. and R. A MIDSUMMER Page CI NIGHT'S DREAM. One possible explanation for "My Favorite Martian." a picture so bad it's unwatchable. is that moviemakers are from Mars and moviegoers are from Venus. Not since "Howard the Duck" has a comedy tried so desperately hard for so pitifully few laughs. With Jeff Daniels and Christopher Lloyd. PG (Martian disembodiment, sexual innuendo) NEVER BEEN KISSED Newspaper copy editor Josie Geller (Drew Barrymore) is assigned to go undercover as a high school student to tell the story of today's teens. Homer Hickam's memoir "Rocket Boys' becomes a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a teen-age- r growing up in a dying West Virginia coal town in the 1950s who becomes infatuated with rockets and builds his own. Though drama, it really styled as a coming-of-agbelongs in the new category of Americana. Rated PG; language. THE 3 Stars. Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn update Neil Simon's 1970 comedy about an Ohio couple's adventure-fille- d night in the big city. The approach here is cute, rather than harrowing, resulting in little e more than a advertisement for New York's new, image. mild sexual situations. Rated PG-1RUSH HOUR 3 stars. East meets pest in this fresh, funny teaming of Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. The martial arts superstar and motormouthed comedian share jabs and jibes as they hunt for a kidnapped girl in Los Angeles. Rated PG-1violence, nonstop profanity. A STAR WARS: EPISODE I THE PHANTOM MENACE 2 stars. Though it doesn't pack the adrenaline or the mythic punch of the rush 12 original, this "prequel" to the "Star Wars" trinity is so nch in physical detail and architectural flourish that it's trppy to visit, the cinematic equivalent of an intergalactic theme park. However strong on visuals, it is weak on narrative and underuses actors Liam Neeson, Ewan McGregor and Natalie Portman. Like a restaurant in another cosmos, it has great atmosphere, but little food for thought. PG (sci-f- i violence) 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT VOU. 3 stars. The Bard's tale of battling lovers, "Taming of the Shrew," gets a rad makeover in this mostly charming high school comedy that manages to avoid most of the cliches of the genre and features appealing lead actors and snappy . dialogue. TWIN DRAGONS. 2 stars. American distributors keep digging deeper into the barrel for Jackie Chan Hong Kong films to redub and present as if they're new. "Twin Dragons" is DimensionMiramax's repackaging of a 1992 actiorvcomedy starring Jackie as separated-at-birttwins who grow up to become an American concert pianist and a Hong Kong mechanic who's also a martial arts expert. The plot, as usual, is incoherent and irrelevant, the comedy is especially broad, and the action scenes aren't quite up to snuff, though Jackie always manages to provide some giggly thrills. Mostly dumb, but if you're in the mood for this sort of thing, you won't have a bad time. P&13. THE WATER BOY 2 stars. Adam Sandler comedy about a backwards bayou boy who stops being a human punching bag and, unleashing decades of rage, becomes a lethal football tackle. While an improvement over "Billy Madison it lacks the heart of "The Wedding Singer." With Henry Winkler and Kathy Bates.
