A J It is ten years since Up With People started. ..born and bred in the midst of the turbulent 60's...born out of an attempt to meet a need, a need manifesting itself in the growing upsurge of youth everywhere, from Berkeley to Bombay, from Chicago to Cairo. Up With People is an i-ndependent, nonprofit, educational, musical program with the aim of developing leadership, responsibility and understanding among races, classes and cultures. Up With People performs throughout the world for communities, hospitals, universities, prisons and special events. Up With People has visited 38 countries in these past ten years where families have opened their homes, hearts and refrigerators to extend one of the greatest cultural ex-periences for these performing youth. Tribute must also be paid to the 3,500 young people from 27 countries who have spent at least a year with Up With People performing almost nightly Up With People annually attracts about 7000 student applicants. One in 18 is finally selected. The performing casts have traveled six continents. They recently performed at the 1976 Super Bowl Game in Florida. In 1976 Up With People will accept invitations to Poland, Yugoslavia, Switzerland and the Middle East. Donnalee Bottomfield, DONNALEE BOTTOMFIELD daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Layne Bottomfield of Pleasant Grove has been extended an invitation to become a cast member of "Up With People" beginning July 26, 1976 and ending July of 1977. She is looking forward to being a part of an International Organization that spreads goodwill throughout the world. She will be a goodwill am-bassador for the state of Utah and also for the city of Pleasant Grove. The costs incurred in this program are large. McKinlay Will speak Sunday Young Adults to Hear Speaker At Fireside Sunday Brother Lynn McKinlay is a special Instructor in the Speech Departmental the B.Y.U. He is a well known speaker and radio and television personality. He has been an Instructor at the Mission Home in Salt Lake. He has been a High Councelor, Bishop,' Ordinance Worker in the Salt Lake Temple, Member of the Sunday School General Board and is presently serving as High Priest Group Leader in the East Sharon Stake. He was the reader for the recording of "Joseph Smith's Own Story" and was the narrator for the Centennial pageant in 1947. He is the author of three books, "Life Eternal", "For Behold Ye Are Free", and "The Spirit Giveth Life". He and his wife, Asenath Passey are the parents of seven children, four boys and three girls. Brother McKinlay has been a great inspiration to all those who hear his lectures. We wish to invite all of the Young Adults of the Stake, The Pleasant Grove Stake and the Alpine Stake to this Fireside, and encourage all of them to be in attendance to hear this fine, inspirational speaker. Fraternal Order Of Eagles to Hold Social on Saturday The Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge No. :!372, Pleasant Grove will hold a social event Saturday March 20th at 8 p.m. in the Aerie home. The Social "A Mexican Fiesta" will include a complete "Mexican Menue" live music, door prizes and a Mexican pinata. Don and Ireta Gurney chairmen, report there will be a $3.00 cover charge per person, all proceeds from this event will be given to the big four charities that the Eagles support, The Heart Fund, The Cancer Fund, The Golden Eagle Fund and the Jimmy Durantee Foundation for Crippled Children. Members are urged to attend thisannual charity event. Guests are wilcome. DIANE LARSEN AND STEVEN SCHIESS Diane Larsen, Steven Schiess Will Be Married Next Friday Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Larsen of Pleasant Grove announce the engagement and forth coming marriage of their daughter Diane to Steven J. Schiess of Orem, Utah. Steven is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George C. Schiess, also of Orem. The young couple plan to be married March 26, with a reception to follow the same evening at the Manila Ward Cultural Hall in Pleasant Grove. All friends and relatives are cordially invited to attend. Diane graduated from the Pleasant Grove High School, and also the LDS Seminary. She was President of the Big and Little Sisters Club. She has attended Brigham Young University. Steve is a graduate of the Orem High School and is now attending the Brigham Young University. He recieved an honorable discharge from the United States Army on December 5, 1973. Dale Murdock, Pleasant Grove, Utah, will become the bride of Mark C. Long in a marriage ceremony to be performed on Friday March 26, in the Salt Lake L.D.S. Temple. Parents of the prospective bridegroom are Mr. and Mrs. Leslie L. Long of American , Fork, Utah. A reception will honor the couple that evening at The 235 South 100 Pleasant Grove, "Utah. All friends and relatives are invited. The newlyweds will be honored at a wedding breakfast hosted by the bridegrooms parents at the Moonraker in Salt Lake. Attending the bride will be JoAnn Carlson, Diane Mur-dock, Jolene Rutledge, Bar-bara Long, Julie Davis, Sara Haynie and Marianne Mur-dock. The bride-elec- t graduated from Pleasant Grove High School and the Salt Lake School of Medical and Dental Assistants and is now employed in Lehi. The groom-to-b- e graduated from American Fork High School and has attended Utah State University. He is now attending the University of Utah where he is majoring in pre-la- Best Man honors will be by Richard Long, brother of the groom. Special Interest Group Sets Week's Agenda The Special Interest religion class will be this Thursday. Meet at the old Provo Seminary Bldg. 300 West 100 South, Provo at 7:30. Friday evening the first of two sessions on Personal Developement will begin. The first session this week will be at 3030 Mojaue Lane Chapel from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Dr. Reba Keele, Asst. Professor Education at BYU, will conduct the program. This program is sponsored by the Provo East Stake YSI. All YSI and SI are invited. The weekly Friday night soft-roc- k dance will be held at 3030 Mojaue Lane, Provo. The dance begins at 9 p.m. and the dress is casual. Everyone is asked to make or buy a kite and bring it and join in the fun. Refreshments will be served. April 1, 1976 at 7:00 p.m. will be our April Fool Day activity. Becky Myers and Shannon Swapp Have Been Models Becky Myers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merlin G. Myers, and Shannon Swapp, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Swapp. have been the ZCMI Youngtimers for 1975-7- 6 from Pleasant Grove High School. During the year the girls have participated in many modeling and fashion events, as well as community service projects. At the July fashion show aponsored by Seventeen Magazine, the Jantzen Company and ZCMI. Becky was selected as second runner-u- p in Ihe Miss Jantzen competition. Shannon has served as Seventeen Magazine representative and historian for the Orem Council. Other modeling engagements in-cluded the ZCMI Bridal Show and the Seventeen Spring Show. Applications for the 1976-7- Youngtimer Council are now available. All PGHS girls who will be seniors next year should contact Becky or Shannon for application forms. Valley View PTA Sets Eection for Thursday, Mar. 25 Valley View P.T.A. an-nounces their upcoming election for the On Thursday, M Mar. 25. all dues-pai- d P.T.A. members will have the op-portunity to choose betweeen Madeline Banner and Shirly Best as the for the 1976-7- 7 year. The woman selected will then become the president of the P.T.A. for the following year. Madeline Banner resides at 1276 East Nathaniel Drive and has been a resident of Pleasant Grove for one year. She and her husband, Wilbur, traveled with the Air Force, spending three years in Colorado and living in Ft. Worth, Texas, just prior to their move here. Madeline studied ballet for seven years, and so lists it among sewing, tole painting, tennis, and playing the marimba as her present hobbies. Much of her time was spent working as a nurse-receptioni- for a veterinarian and as a teacher's aide before she had her two boys- - a kindergartener and a three and a half year old Shirley Best and her husband, Gary live at 194 East 2nd South with their four children. David, Danny, Lori and Tiffanee. After graduating from Snow College in business she then spent seven years working for Central Bank and Trust. During her 3'2 years in Pleasant Grove she has en-joyed sewing, handicrafts and sports as hobbies. Shieley has served in secretarial positions, as a primary teacher and as sports director in the LDS Church. Both of these women are well qualified to serve as the up-coming vice president of the Valley View PTA. but it takes your vote at the PTA meeting on March 25 to place one of them there. |
