Show 4D Monday, August 25. The Salt Lake Tribune, Tribune Sports Scoreboard Zaelit Was Public Servant Who Died in Line of Duty It was a year ago when a friendly canoeist named John Zaelit paddled beside us on a trip down the Green River. To a person with limited abilities in a canoe, his skill was amazing. It seemed as if he could move the canoe just about anywhere he wanted with smooth, easy strokes. On every group outing like this one, where strangers gather from many places, one person usually stands out. On this trip, Zaelit's friendly nature and willingness to share his knowledge and skill made him the man novices went to for advice. During the long campfire programs in the middle of the wilderness, Zaelit would talk about the places he loved best. And, the Jordan River was always close to the top of his list. He lived near the Jordan River Parkway and spent much of his spare time canoeing there. When he applied for a season canoe ranger job on the jordan this year, he told park superintendent Bard Ferrin why he should be hired. "You might as well pay me to clean up the river, because Im going to do it anyway, Ferrin remembers Zaelit saying. John would use his own canoe inst-e- d of ours because he felt it could hold more litter, making it easier for him to keep the river clean, continued Ferrin. "He was en environmentalist at heart with real strong convictions. We were impressed with his love of the Jordan River. He was usually there, even on his own time. And, Zaelit was there last week at the canoe chute near the Utah Power and Light plant just south of North Temple when a father and three young children tipped over trying to negotiate their way through the one rough part of the river. Pro Tennis lic servants are willing to sacrifice. Ferrin says that a fund for John Zaelits wife and young son has been set up. Those interested can call the or write Parkway office at to Jordan River State Parkway, 1084 North Redwood Road, Salt Lake City, 533-449- 6 84116. "Canoes capsize in the chute all the time, said Ferrin. Its the exciting part of the river trip. This time, the canoe had some small kids in it. In Johns eyes, they must have needed some help. He went into assist them and went under." From there, no one is really quite sure what happened. Zaelit, though an experienced canoeist, was a poor swimmer. Even though the water was only about six feet deep under the chute with sand bars nearby, John ran into trouble. In the end, he drowned while trying to help someone else who loved the Jordan as much as he did. Zaelits tragic death brings home a point many recreationists often forget when they look at state and national park rangers and wildlife game wardens as people who are just around to hassle them. These dedicated men and women are always called when fun and games suddenly turn into life and death situations. This is a horrible shock, said Ferrin. "Were supposed to be in a fun recreation business, but that can stop so quickly when there is an emergency. All of a sudden, the fun stops and things can become very serious. Park rangers are called on for search and rescue missions at all hours and during all weather conditions. The death of John Zaelit in the line of duty points out what these pub Steel Shot Seminars: a number of waterfowl hunters have questions about steel shot. Division of Wildlife Resources biologists will try to answer these questions in the next few weeks at a series of 10 steel shot seminars which will be held throughout the state. They are designed to answer questions covering the biological effects of lead shot, shooting techniques for steel shot and basic waterfowl identification. The meetings begin at 7 p.m. The schedule includes meetings Monday at the Cedar City DWTR office and the State and County Office Building in Vernal; Tuesday at the Municipal Building in Price and the Mountain Fuel Supply Auditorium in Logan; Wednesday in the DWR Ogden office and in Brigham City; Sept. 8 at the Lee Kay Center in West Valley City; Sept. 9 in Layton; Sept. 10 in the Provo Elks Lodge and Sept. 11 in the South Jordan Library. State Park Open Again: Fort Buenaventura STate Park, located on the Weber River at 2450 A Street in Ogden, is open once again after being damaged by a 1984 fire. The fort was recently reconstructed. The park will be open from 9 a m. to 6 p.m. daily. It celebrates Utahs oldest permanent white settlement in the Great Basin. Park facilities include a replica of the mountain man fort, stockade, cbins, picnic facilities and rest rooms. Special mountainmen presentations and school field trips may be scheduled by calling 621-480- Hinault, Longo Claim Overall Titles in Coors Cycling Classic - French BOULDER, Colo. (AP) cyclists Jeannie Longo and Bernard Hinault, both riding for the Red Zinger team, won their respective divisions of the Coors International Bicycle Classic on Sunday. For Longo it was the second Coors Classic win in a row, and for Hinault a fitting way to end his final multi-da- y race before he retires later this year. Longo said she is very proud that two riders from France won Americas biggest stage race. She and Hinault are two of the worlds best Hinault, of Yffiniac, a fivetime winner of the Tour de France and Longo, of Grenoble, the world road race champion. Longo came in second in the final stage of the Classic, the North Boulder Park Circuit Race, behind Susan Ehlers of the Centurion team. The mens North Boulder race was won by Ron Kiefel of the team. KieBut neither the fel, from Wheat Ridge, Colo., nor second-plac- e finisher Roy Knick-ma- n of the Levis team and Adrie Van Der Poel of Holland Pro were threats to the top mens standings.
