L Bishop manager of the Northwest Northwest Northwest North North- west Refining Division Phillips Phillips Phillips Phil Phil- lips Petroleum Company 1294 East Millbrook Way ful BORN IN Panhandle Texas in 1913 George Bishop was the son of the local grain elevator ele operator coal and ice busi busi- The family parents two daughters and George moved to a farm near Canyon Texas when he was five years old Their dry farm near Canyon was the first farm in the country to have electric lights a volt 32 Western Electric plant However the long drought of the twenties were hard on farmers in the area and before the general depression depression depression depres depres- sion started in 1929 the Bishops were no longer living off of wheat crops and pedigreed cat cat- tle They were trying to scratch out a living with a whole herd about 60 milk cows some chickens and a few pigs GEORGE STILL remembers with great pleasure The pride I felt in the school clothes which were purchased with the money I received for trapping skunks coyotes and badgers mostly skunks and shipping their furs to the Funsten Company of St. St Louis Georges George's dad was a great student of the Civil War and his he was turned down because of flat feet His feet weren't too fat for National Guard and George joined up in 1931 so I could get a wool shirt a pair of shoes and 1 a week for drilling on Thursday dad milked 60 50 cows he made good grades in chemistry was president president president pres pres- ident of the Honor Society and therefore decided upon a career in medicine The horrendous horrendous horrendous hor black dusters of 1933 34 and 35 found the Bishops in the middle of the worst dust bowl and the worst de de- de- de Scholarships were out of the question so George decided to teach chemistry for a few years ears and save for expenses necessary for medical school He found a teaching job which he was to start in September 1935 However in the meantime meantime mean mean- time he had to eat and he was lucky enough to get temporary employment with the yard gang at Phillips Petroleum Petroleum Petrol Petrol- eu eum n Company's Borger Re Re- finery I was paid 40 cents per hour better than the teaching teaching teaching teach teach- ing job And except for some loaned service assignments I have been with Phillips ever since HE MET Sarah McGowen a school teacher at Phillips Texas Teas and they were married in June of 1941 They are the parents of two sons George and Nick and one daughter Sally In 1943 George found that with his National Guard training training training train train- ing he was qualified for a commission commission commission com com- mission as a Navy pilot of small craft if he had his private private private vate pilots pilot's license He received received received re re- re- re his commission and was assigned to initial duty at Fort Scyler New York by May 1943 HE HAD just completed an assignment of helping to start startup startup startup up the worlds world's first hydrofluoric hydrofluoric hydrofluoric hydro hydro- acid plant which made the highest quality component for aviation gasoline So George recalls the powers that be changed my assignment and plans and sent me as a civilian on loan to New v e s l IYe as a consulting engineer engine r to to the Aviation Gasoline Advisory Committee In this assignment 1 helped to work out the bugs of the HF plants throughout the United States and to furnish the military with a projection of how much aviation gasoline would be available each month as the war progressed Following his military assignment assignment assignment assign assign- ment George returned to the Borger Refinery where he worked as chief chemist The Bishops' Bishops sons were born during during during dur dur- ing this period at Phillips Texas IN 1947 Phillips bought out Wasatch Oil Company George requested a transfer to the Northwest Instead his good goodfriend goodfriend friend and boss Bill Keeler now chairman of the Board sent him to Houston just the opposite direction nevertheless nevertheless nevertheless never never- the less the Bishops enjoyed their Gulf Coast assignment He was sent to Okmulgee Oklahoma in 1949 to manage that refinery They built a comfortable home in the country country country coun coun- try and George taught his two boys the joys of trapping skunk and possum Then in 1954 he was assigned assign assign- ed to the job of manager of Phillips Northwest Refining Division with his office at atWoods atWoods atWoods Woods Cross HE WAS loaned out again in 1957 to Pacific Ltd The family moved to Fort St. St John British Columbia Columbia Colum Colum- bia where George managed the Pacific's manufacturing department in starting up the million 30 dollar processing plant located where the Alaska Highway crosses the Peace River While they were in Fort St. St John the Bishops were blessed with the birth of their third child Sally and she has had her daddy pretty well wrapped around her little finger ever since Sarah and the children moved back to Bountiful expecting George to follow shortly but he was almost a year later He commuted back and forth from Calgary on weekends to assist Sarah in getting their present home on Millbrook Way built OUT-OF-DOORS OUT enthusiasts the Bishops built a summer summerhome summerhome summerhome home of genuine log cabin construction on Hebgen Lake shortly after returning to Bountiful George reasoned that since it is hard to get born in a log cabin anymore the next best thing is to build one The Bishops claim Our family did and we keep looking forward to the time when we can have more time to spend in it George also enjoys hunting and fishing but his main hobby hobby hobby hob hob- by has seemed to be in di diverse diverse diverse di- di verse business activities ranging ranging ranging rang rang- ing from a greasy spoon cafe to uranium mines where he met Robert G. G Harding of Bountiful Their partnership is one of interest but has been merged with International Energy and their parent company company company com com- pany was converted to a diversified di diversified diversified di- di versified investment company Industrial West Incorporated which has taken Georges George's interests into the fields of shopping centers farming and ranching operations and the computer industry BOTH GEORGE and Sarah have always been active in community affairs George has served as president of the Okmulgee Rotary Club and the Bountiful Rotary Club He was honored by the Borger Junior Chamber of Commerce as the Young the while he was serving as president of the Phillips Lions Club Cluba a as well as being a member of the Phillips Phillies School Board Other community and industry industry industry indus indus- try activities at the current time include Appointed by the Secretary of the Interior as Utah State Manager of Emergency Emergency Emergency Emer Emer- gency Petroleum and Gas Administration G Governor o 0 v e ern r n o 0 r Rampton has appointed appoint ed him a member of the Utah Air Conservation Conservation Conservation Con Con- Committee He holds membership with Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Commerce Commerce Com Com- merce Advisory Council Air Conservation Committee and Winter Sports Committee and has been trying to promote promote promote pro pro- mote a curling rink ever since he moved back from Canada MEMBER OF the Utah State Advisory Committee for Selective Service He serves as a Director of Utah Manufacturers Manufacturers Manufacturers Manu Manu- Assoc of the South Davis Community Hospital in addition to being a member of Davis County Hospital Association Committee He is isa isa isa a member of the Bonneville Knife and Fork He serves on the Board of Directors of Bountiful Community Church and is chairman of the membership membership membership mem mem- committee With all of this George says he Ought to know better but I have just recently recent recent- ly accepted another job as a member of the Advisory Committee Committee Committee Com Com- of the Utah Technical College because I feel that the area of vocational training training training train- train ing is very important and is providing purpose pride and usefulness for many people not all youngsters who are I Inot not inclined to go the academic academic academic aca- aca I demic route THE BISHOP family's love for the outdoors is evident by bythe bythe bythe the diversity of plants they have in the combination greenhouse greenhouse green green- een- een house and breakfast area We raise our own tomatoes in inthe inthe inthe the wintertime he proudly boasts The family thinks I carried the out-of-doors out idea a little too far when I set seta a trap for what I thought was a packrat which had found his way into the house somehow Instead I caught a genuine striped skunk with a full load of his odorant right in inside inside inside in- in side our beautiful new home right after we moved in George confided Since Sarah didn't cripple or divorce him for that he thinks s that 1294 Millbrook Way will remain his permanent address |
