Stale Director Annual drive of the National Foundation for Infantile ParalvsiM to raise funds with which to fight poliomyelitis began be-gan in Utah January 14 and will close January 31. In all previous campaigns the appeal has enjoyed the whole-hearted support of the people of Utah and it is sincerely sincere-ly hoped that this year's appeal will meet with the same consideration con-sideration as previous ones. Utah was fortunate in 1944 in that only a few cases of poliomyelitis were reported. But a large amount of money was spent helping those who were striken during the 1943 'epidemic Twelve patients were sent to ttie warm springs 'foundation where they received treatment which resulted in their being returned home materially benefited by the aid they received. .Most of them went to the train on stretchers but were able to walk alone when they came back, and this year's appeal is doubly important because we not only must j prepare for the future, but due to wonderful strides made in the fields of medicine and orthopedic surgery, many victims of former years, for years have been considered hopelessly crippled, now find that they can be helped and for all intents and purposes become normal, self-supporting men and women. There is reason to hope that this year the legislature will provide funds for the erection of a Crippled Childrens' hospital, hos-pital, where polio sufferers can be taken care of, and if this hope becomes a fact it will not be necessary to send children to Warm Springs, Georgia. )! the money raised in this state, 50 per cent stays in the county in which it is raised to help take care of the physical phys-ical needs of the sufferers from poliomyelitis, and if the chapters chap-ters so desire, a portion of their 50 per cent could be used to help purchase polio equipment for the contemplated hospital. Of the 50 per cent sent to New York, grants are made i.o grreal scientists, universities, for research work in the field oi virus research, epidemiology, physical medicine, etc.. to the end that a vaccine will be discovered that will immunize I children against Infantile Paralysis, thus placing that dreaded dread-ed disease on a shelf along with diphtheria, small pox and other kindred diseases, no longer a serious menace to future America.
