Show Student choreography highlights first dance concert 3 s Y r 1 J i s- s k rit r I IC n. n C 7 Jack Foriska Staff Writer Friday May 18 marked the beginning of a new era at The newly-formed newly Salt Lake Community College Dance Club presented the first dance concert ever at the col col- col- col lege The dancers performed perform ed two shows 1130 am a.m. and 1230 pm p.m. respectively in the college gym The concert consisted of both jazz and modern dance numbers Five out of the six numbers were choreographed by student members of the club The remaining number was created by Tess Golata the clubs club's adviser The concert opened up with a hard driving dance number called What I want What I need The choreography choreography choreography raphy for this piece was done by Carrie Mackey a student at who has been dancing since she was two and a half and teaches teaches d dance nce at Becky's School of Dance She also choreographed Signs of Life an impressionistic impressionistic impressionistic number that used a combination of new-age new music elegant hand movements movements movements move move- ments and simple ballet steps to make a serious statement about life Julie Morgan a dancer with the Masquerade Dance Co as well as with the club created two arrange arrange- ments Quite contrasting in nature were Attitude a snappy up-beat up piece set to modern music and I A A Splash of the Past a revival for those of us old enough to remember the monkey the swim and the pony Attitude was a well rehearsed stylish piece characterized characterized characterized char char- by elaborate sensual moves and sexy costumes It was definitely a highlight of the concert Liberian Girl choreographed by the clubs adviser Tess Golata was the piece de resistance Soft pastel pastel pastel pas pas- tel dresses blended with smooth fluid ballet steps served to create a calming and relaxing experience of mo mo- tion Wide sweeping maneuvers that encompassed the entire stage combined with silky sensuous shoulder movements to take the audience for an extremely pleasurable ride The concert finished with witha a a. a hot piece called Sweet Thing This number fused intricate intricate intricate in in- timing lots of hand movements and jammin music to get the audience in their seats The hour was a welcome change of pace from the usual routine associated with activities' activities weeks and a definite plus for Splash Week The club wanted to thank Kelly Weldon electronic media specialist for all his help with the lights and setup The Dance Club will willbe willbe willbe be active summer quarter and welcomes new members Prior dance experience is not necessary necessary necessary sary and anybody can join Members are not required to perform Club officers are Cheri Leavitt president Sherri Wilson Wilson Wilson Wil Wil- son secretary and Julie Morgan Morgan Morgan Mor Mor- gan treasurer |
