Show Thursday, February 1, 2007 Academic All-Region Congratulations to Lisa Bartholomew who was named to Academic All-Region for the 2006-07 year. Lisa is a senior at Gunnison Valley High School. She has a 4.0 GPA and plays on the girls basketball team. Lisa is the daughter of Scott and Lila Bartholomew of Fayette. Counselor’s Corner By MRS. LINDA MILLER Utah Valley State College is sponsoring its 21st annual Expanding Your Horizons Conference on Saturday March 3, 2007 from 7:30 am to 1 pm in the UVSC Sorensen Student Center. This is a math/science/technology career conference for 6th to 12th grade girls. Each year 1,000 girls with their parents and educators come to learn about careers and education opportunities in a variety of high-paying career fields. This year’s theme is Mission: Possible with a focus on introducing the girls to all the possibilities and choices women have for the future. Forty-five workshops, taught by women working in those fields, will be taught. There will be a variety of interactive booths to explore. The registration fee is $25. Southern Utah University is sponsoring a Health Career Exploration Camp for all high school students inter- ested in health care careers. The purpose of the camp is to provide a handson health career learning experience for students from rural areas. Students will work side-by-side with actual health care professionals and Southern Utah University and University of Utah Professors for three days. They will also be mentored by pre-medical and prehealth professional students from SUU who will be group leaders. The camp is at SUU in Cedar City on June 11,12 & 13. The cost to attend the camp is $70 which provides housing and meals the 3 days. The camp has been held for the past 8 years, so slots fill us fast. The deadline to apply is May 30, 2007, but if you plan to attend apply early. Brochures and applications are available in the counseling office. Engineering State 2007 will be held on the Utah State University campus June 11-14. The program is sponsored by USU engineering alumni, engineering firms and industry. All high school juniors who are university bound, with a high interest in math and science, and interested in engineering as a possible field of study should apply for Engineering State. The application deadline is March 16 and the registration fee is $100. You can get an application in the counseling office or at the website: www.engineering.usu. edu/estate. Students from Gunnison Valley High School who have attended any of these conferences in the past said they had a great experience and would like to go again. Schools The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 5 GVES holds annual science fair The annual Gunnison Valley Elementary School science fair was held last week. Students from second to fifth grades were invited to participate. Winners from the first grade were Hunter Anderson in first place, Kate Sorensen in second and McKenzi Sorensen in third. Other participants from the second grade were Tyler Francis, Emily Edwards and Dustin Zeeman. Winners from the third grade were Payton Judy in first place, Mallori Reber and Kennady Jensen in second place and McKade Cox in third place. Other participants in the third grade were Josie Sorenson, Belle Blackburn, Ryleigh Jensen and Shelem Hatch. Winners in the forth grade were Austin Francis in first place, Carlie Fredrickson in second place and Jodee Hartley in fifth place. Fifth grade winners were first place, Garrett Sorensen, second place, Amelia Hammond and third place, Kaitlyn Bown. Classes as a whole were also invited to participate in the fair. This scholarship allowed Heather the opportunity to attend the Northeast Piping Academy. Heather will be featured with her bagpipes at each night’s performance. “Brigadoon” will open Saturday Feb 3rd at 7:00 pm, and continue on Monday February 5th at 7:00 pm, the show’s final performance will take place Tuesday February 6th at 7:00 pm in the GVHS auditorium. Sesquicentennial Update Preparations for a valley wide, year long celebration of the Centerfield centennial and Gunnison sesquicentennial are underway. In order for the activities to have a wide appeal, many volunteers are needed to work on one event only, or more events if desired. The organizing committee is requesting volunteers for any of the following events or activities: • Have everyone over 80 years old ride in the parades (Current or former residents) • History of cow milking by photos • Art Show featuring school kids, local artists, local scenes • Baseball/softball/soccer/volleyball/ basketball etc. tournaments (Centennial Classics) • Artist in residence to help compile local histories • History of Church activities and changes • Special cancellation at the two post offices during that year?
