Volume Ninety-Seve- EUREKA, UTAH - July 5, 2002 n Plrice $.40 Number 27 School homd seeks citizen input on schedule At the regular meeting of the school board, Tintic High School teacher, Paula Evans, reported on the phone survey to parents regarding the proposed change for the daily time schedule and both elementary and high schools in Eureka and West Desert The board voted to hold a public meeting on July 22nd to receive input from parents. The board discussed filling Clint Barney's position at Tintic They were High School. concerned about filling the special education part of Mr. Barneys position. The board discussed the tenth grade competency test that will be given far the first time next year to tenth grade students. They board explained they would like to be able to review the accountability test materials. Superintendent Barlow said he would make a copy of the test available to the Board. Ronald Barlow reported that would like to establish guidelines for a chain of command at the district level. He explained that once the guidelines are drafted he will present them to the Board in the July board meeting for discussion and approval. Mr. Barlow explained this would allow employees at whatever level to be he accountable for their responsibilities and he would supervise those employees. Ronald Bray inquired about portable restrooms being put up to the baseball field and up by the park. Ron was concerned about little league baseball games going on at the park this summer with no Ron restrooms. recommend the District lease four portable restrooms, two to be put at the city park and two up at the baseball field at Tintic High accessible School. The consensus of the board was to lease the portable restrooms. Troy Jones recommended the board review the District's current policy on early graduation requirements. Troy stated he feels there arc some parts of the early graduation policy that need to be studied. Board President, Mary Lou Draper said she will have this item on the agenda for the July board workshop retreat. Troy Jones reported that Brian Underwood has installed the tennis net on the tennis courts adjacent to Eureka and Elementary complimented Brian on how much of an improvement he has made to restore the courts. Troy Jones reported that he had talked with the building trades director. Jay Evans, and Mr. Evans had three students signed up for the program. Troy explained that initially ten students signed up for the program but many of these students had gotten summer jobs and had dropped out of the program. Troy reported two sheds were finished and looked very nice. Troy Jones reported he had talked with Jay Evans regarding the old drill rig behind Tintic High School. Troy explained the drill rig and other equipment behind Tintic Highs School are no longer being used and Mr. Evans agreed that it would be in the best interest of the district to make to remove this equipment Tory recommend the drill putting rig up for bid or auction. The Board agreed to arrangements Troys recommendation. Ronald Barlow reported that Superintendent Rowse had given him a request from Shad Garbett for early graduation. Mr. Barlow reported that Shads parents and Baseball games set for this week baseball season is winding down, but there arc a few games left Congratulations to all of the teams on a great year! The board voted to table Shads request for early graduation pending his post graduation plan. Ronald Barlow gave the board an update on summer maintenance projects. He reported that painting of the gym at Tintic High School was completed and the painters were ready to begin painting at the district office. He reported the gym at Tintic HS was ready for AWS Hardwood Flooring to start sanding and refinishing the floor. Mr. Barlow reported to date that the asphalt services in the parking lots had not be started. Winners told in youth poster contest The United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development sponsored a poster contest for the Eureka Elementary fourth grade students. These students participated in the contest during the last week of school. The poster contest was for National Home Ownership Week. USDA Rural Development provides adequate housing or housing reports to help families in need. Students drew pictures of families getting houses or making repairs on the houses they owned. The students pictured won the contest and were awarded certificates and prizes. First place wait to Kristin Cunningham, Second place to Rachel Gout, third place to Kry stal Crawford, and Landon Fitzgerald was awarded an honorary mention. Congratulations to these students on doing a terrific job! All students did an excellent job in the contest. The Rural Development Department had many compliments to give on students in Tintic School District arc. They were very impressed by the creative artwork sent in by the fourth grade students. how-talente- Landon Fitzgerald, Rachel Gout, Kristin Cunningham, and Krystal Crawford were the winners of the National Home Ownership Week poster contest. City fathers, citizens meet about water The city held a public meeting to hear comment on changing the water restriction times. There w as a good turnout. Many residents were concerned with the time of day they were allowed to water. Council member, Klay asked Allinson, city planner, Fred to Garbett, explain to residents how the wells worked. He explained there is no reliable way to check the levels at the well without risking contamination of the water supply. He also explained that once the new well is piped into town, we shouldn't have the same problems. The Mayor explained that the railroad is in the process of giving the right of way through their property so that the piping should be able to begin soon.
