her regular household d chores and reading when she feels like it I 1 during her lifetime mrs redd has seen many changes when she i first came to monticello in there were no electric lights no telephones no radios no automobile ep no water system andi and no sewer sewer system culinary water I 1 was carried by hand either from irrigation Tri gation ditches or reservoirs i disease and sickles were common I 1 from this source of water which was seldom free from some kind of contamination it was mrs redd with other pioneer women who first began the movement that resulted in the piang of the alf ar pure spring water from the mountain when the system was installed and it was possible for the housewives to draw water I 1 from a hydrant in their own front I 1 yard it was a real step forward I 1 one of the big changes as the frontier town adopted some of the I 1 modern conveniences was the elimination mi nation of the kerosene lamp which gave way to electricity she i has witnessed all the changes that have transformed monticello from a sprawling cow town to a modern village with paved sidewalks and a traffic problem she not has taken a a very active pah part in the growth and development of the town durin during 0 its early history monticello like many other utah towns was very closely associated 1 with the L D S church the work and development of the ward ran a close parallel to chati that of the community those who word has been received by donald adams county democratic chairman that senator elbert D thomas will be in san juan county friday september 22 senator thomas will speak at the monticello high school auditorium at pm and at the san juan high school in blanding at I 1 senator thomas is chairman of the labor and public welfare committee as well as a member of the foreign relations comal itce atee he was recently voted one of the ranking best senators in a nonpolitical non political vote taken recently 1 and has served the state for the past eighteen years in the united states senate were most active in church affairs were also the most active 1 civic leaders and bo of thel the community mrs redd was one of the stalwarts stal warts in county utah september 21 1864 the daughter of james and margaret calhoun pace she attended school n st george and later taught school in new harmony she was married in the st george temple april 2 1884 to james monroe redd mr redd had visited san juan with the first group in settle bluff and had had it ain his mind to i return in 1887 the redd family put all their houe should goods in covered wagons and started the long trek to san juan by way of the hole in the rock they liv ed in bluff from that time until they moved to monticello in 1905 during the time she lived in bluff mrs redd served as ward president of the tor for 11 years and also as a stake board member for the same organization which last position she held for 30 years during this time too she was secretary of the stake relief society all these activities and the rearing of her family still allowed her time to serve as postmistress of bluff and to manage the affairs of the family while her husband served a mission for the church in the southern states after moving to monticello she nerved served in various ward capacities in in the relief society being president of that organization in the stake for eight and one half years she was one of the organizers of the san juan camp of the D U P and served at various times imes as secretary vice president and president of that group she instrumental in having rebuilt and placed on the public square the first house to be built in mon acello she served at one time as a member of the san juan board of education it sema that her energies were inexhaustible because all through these years keam sh she was often called as a practical nurse and did duty at the bedside of the sick and dying during some of the worst epidemics of cont contagious ageous and infectious diseases she was the constant conc tant attendant of her husband as his illness lingered for three years before his death in 1937 1 I have known some strong people and some trying times in my day sister redd says and ana my life Is made richer by the association of both I 1 learned to love and respect the sturdy pioneer stock who buffe suffered red such privation in the selling of this country mrs redd is the mother ol 01 nine children seven of whom arm are still living they are isabel J IL jr mrs 0 W mcconkle john alta hortense ray V A son alton who was the twin brother to alta was accidentally shot when he was 13 years of age the last child a girl g arl named fawn died at the age of two mrs redds life has been characterized by her activity and her staunch defense of her convictions she has been a leader and the good she has done will long be a monument to t her |
