Show URGES destruction OF grasshoppers farm demonstrator owens and dr evans offer timely advice on destruction of pests wm win W owens sevier county agent and dr R J evans of the utah agricultural college have just completed an investigation of the reported grasshopper trouble in the county the young hoppers ar are e abundant on the high lying farms unless something is done at once the crops will be taken the alfalfa first the most effective method now is to poison with poisoned bran made as follows 20 pounds bran 1 pound arsenic arsenic or one pound paris green 2 quarts syrup 3 oranges or lemons and 31 gallons water mix bran and poison together thoroughly while dry do not breathe the poison mix syrup oranges and water thoroughly then sprinkle the solution over bran until poison sticks to it have moist but not wet this should be sown broadcast on strips of of alfalfa left at cutting and along ditch banks covered with alfalfa when the latter is cut leave strips about 6 to 8 feet wide every 12 to 15 rods the hoppers will gather on these strips then sea scatter ater the poisoned bran broadcast along these strips it must be done at at daylight in the morning the hay should be cut right away and bran set as each day the task becomes harder the alfalfa is alright to cut now this method will not endanger live stock call mr owens or write him at richfield if you need more help |
