On the CBS news a short time later McGovern denied the charges and documents were produced for the edification of TV - viewers, which allegedly substantiated his contention. Now with the Columbia Broadcasting Companys record of bias, distortion, and error, I accept Mr. Cronkites nightly comment that, thats the way it with a high degree of is, skepticism. I can scarcely believe that the electronic media with its leftish orientation or Mr. McGovern, the chosen of the hirsute, obscene street rabble would in such a cursory manner dismiss the opportunity to discredit, smear, and destroy a really effective organization. The welkin should anti-commun- ist be ringing with indignant denials, threats of lawsuits and demands for retraction and apology.' The Wolf Pack should be in hot pursuit and in fine voice, with even the erudite editor, television personality and intellectual snob of the Responsible Right indubitably lending his Yale accent to the chorus. Senator Bennetts keynote address is a nominating speech for Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Wolthuis. Almost everything possible is done to give Mr. Lloyd a convention victory. Even I help by calling the delegates, My Fellow Democrats. Fortunately, 343 delegates keep their heads, when all about are losing theirs and blaming it on me . At his point we feel the pressure of the entrenched power of the party behind us, maintaining themselves or their kind in office. The spectacle is something to behold in a convention which traditionally affords equal The keynote theme of the Utah' Republican State Convention was party unity. Since the convention I have been contemplating the meaning of this theme party unity. What is party unity? First let me ask: What is the party? Is it Senator Bennett? Is it Congressman Lloyd? Is it State Chairman Shearer? No none of them, although they are each a part of it, but no more than any other Republican. The party is the grassroots, the rank and file Republicans, all working together for a general cause. The two thousand state delegates assembled at the state convention are a fair representation of the over all party of the State of Utah. So what is party unity? Let me put it this way. Suppose you and I are standing before the state convention and we ask the delegates: Will all delegates please stand who are opposed to Senator McGoverns guaranteed annual income of $6,500.00. Of course all 100 percent the delegates stand. This is party unity unity. Then, suppose we ask: Please remain standing if you are also opposed to the same guaranteed annual income, called a Family Assistance Allowance, of which Archie Davis, $2,400.00 as contained in HR-president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, says has within it the potential to destroy our private economy as we know it. Probably 90 percent or more remain standing again more than 90 percent party unity. Again suppose we ask: Please remain standing if you oppose e controls. Nearly all remain standing again Please ask: stand if we Now. you oppose unity. dollars to tax Export-Impo- rt of loans Bank your Communist and governments who support total the enemy in Vietnam. All the delegates stand party unity. Further we ask: Please remain standing if you oppose the projected 39 billion dollar deficit for the now beginning fiscal year. Very few sit down again Please remain real party unity. Finally we ask: standing if you oppose handgun controls. Nearly all remain standing. Again we have almost total party unity. At this point we turn to Congressman Lloyd and Senator Bennett and ask: Gentlemen, who among us is for unity within the party as expressed by this delegation? I, for one, am very much in unity with the expression of this body in opposing these issues. But, Mr. Lloyd, are you? Have you represented us by opposing these issues in Congress? Are you in step with the party?, Are you truly representing the rank and file Republicans of this state? Mr. Lloyd, if you had voted against these issues, thus representing us at the grassroots level, I WOULD NOT BE OPPOSING YOU TODAY We would all be Anti-Americ- I behind you. But your long stay in Washington seems to have changed your voting. You seem to want unity, not with your constituents, but with those who are moving us toward total government control. Turning to the delegates we say: The day of your DECISION is today NOT THIS FALL. The question is: Are you going to continue with this kind of if you continue this same representation? If you do representation in Congress, having knowledge of the voting record, we can only pray: God, save us from - - George Hansen, Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, Extra-Ste- p unveiled a Program on Human Rights during campaign appearances this week. ANDERSON McGovern Critic Review - pwr1- Page Candidate for United States Congress First District, Utah Out of Convention Into Primary On Saturday, we passed the first hurdle toward victory in November. Usually, I would not have been satisfied with only 36 percent of the delegate vote. But in this case my contest was not only against my opponent, but also Senator Wallace Bennett and a number of the hierarchy of the party (who are supposed to be neutral until after the primary). So, all factors considered, I think we did yery well. We are in the primary and on the ballot, which is what our opposition was trying frantically to prevent. Now the people will determine the results in the primary and general elections, and that will be a much different story. The endorsements of party leaders and Senator Bennett will have little effect. In fact, when the voters review Senator Bennetts recent voting record, his endorsement of my opponent should prove advantageous to us. Now the work begins. We have eight weeks to prove to the people that we will give them better representation in Washington than our opponent. And we can do it. Our filmstrips on inflation and the CFR have been receiving favorable comments. 1 think this approach will prove that we are serious about wanting to solve the problems in our government and give them good representation.. The formula to victory is going to be teamwork. It is very probably that since we have tackled the Federal Reserve Board and the Council on Foreign Relations, which most politicians and candidates consider too hot to handle, that our opposition will be very well financed. But while they' have the money, we have the people! Our team is growing rapidly. In fact, we recruited some excellent new team members at the state convention. And good people are more valuable than money. So we have a real advantage, and we are going to keep it! |
