Transportation service causes controversy Graduation Transportation plans to provide free taxi service for seniors by Madison Furrh OF THE RECORD STAFF As graduation night approaches law enforcement officials, parents, and concerned community members mem-bers all prepare for the event and, more specifically the aftermath of parties and alcohol consumption, in their own way. Deputy Police Chief Lloyd Evans warned, "We'll have extra officers come out to pay attention to the parties that are going on in regard to the alcohol use and other illegal activities." He continued, "I think the parents par-ents ought to know and the teenagers who decide to participate in those activities that they are subject to arrest and any penalties sanctioned by the juvenile court system." Historically, the Park City Police Department has doled out a number of citations on graduation night. Evans said, "We generally expect to deal with some large-scale large-scale party. Last year we probably cited 30-plus juveniles and sent many more on their way home whose activities were questionable." question-able." He continued, "My advice would be to the parents to work it out with their children so they can help or discourage their child from drinking. As far as we are concerned con-cerned all underage kids should not drink or use drugs." For any kids who are considering consider-ing drinking and driving he advised, "We would encourage any underage individual, or any individual indi-vidual for that matter, not to drink and drive. They ought not be out and about in public looking for trouble." Graduation Transportation offers a solution To help ensure that the streets will not be filled with teenagers who have been celebrating David Hampshire and up to 45 volunteers plan on providing local students with a free transportation service from 8:30 p.m. until dawn on graduation grad-uation night. Although there are many alternatives to celebrating graduation than drinking alcohol many teenagers will, of course, choose to imbibe. Graduation Transportation, according to Hampshire, began ottering this service in 1985. "We decided decid-ed we wanted to provide the graduating seniors with transportation on graduation night to relieve the parents of a lot of their worries." He continued, contin-ued, "The way it works is they call i us up and we take them where they want to go. And by six or seven in the morning we'd take the last of them home and that was it. It was a real kick." Parents and kids, according to Hampshire appreciated the service. "Everybody saw the value of this so it wasnt hard work. It was fun. It was a real positive experience." He added, "We've been doing it every year since. Now we have some of the people driving who were in the earlier graduating classes." When the service first started they used four vans loaned to them' by Park City Transportation. Now All Resort Express allows them to use four of their vans as well, bring- We get criticism from some people that we're encouraging kids to drink and that's just' not the case. National, state, and county statistics sta-tistics show that teenage drivers are extremely susceptible to traffic fatalities. According to a press release from the Summit County Health Department, four-out-of- six 1995 traffic fatalities in Summit County were alcohol related and that nearly one-third of all deaths to teenagers nationwide result from motor vehicle crashes. It also stated, "High school graduation is a particularly dangerous time of year." But the service has been receiving receiv-ing some criticism. Evans said, "It's a fine line, what they are trying to accomplish. The fact of the matter is in Utah it is illegal for anyone to under 21 to consume alcohol." He continued, con-tinued, "It is still unlawful to aid or assist minors in the consumption of alcohol. Their hearts are in the right place but it sends the wrong message and they could find themselves on the wrong side of the law." Hampshire responded, "It's a non-judgmental kind of thing. There were kids drinking long before we started start-ed this and I'm sure if we stopped, they'd still drink. Even kids who dont drink arent experienced drivers dri-vers and they're tired. It's just not a good idea." He added, "There's a sanctioned sanc-tioned party at the Racquet Club and we obviously will take kids there, too." In 1985 there were 90 graduating graduat-ing seniors and this year there are about 180. The increase in students has caused Graduation Transportation to need many more volunteers. Hampshire said, "We're still looking for drivers. We try to have two people in each van. One drives and the other reads maps and answers the radio. We need 45 people to make it work and we only have 25." Graduation Transportation will be providing rides for the seniors anywhere inside the Park City School District and is free of charge.
