OCTOBER 1994 - 3 Development on the Colo rado Monday, September 26, by their failure to take a stand, the Grand County Council chose to allow large scale development along the banks of the Colorado River at the Boulden Ranch. The same County Council decision allows subdivisions in unincorporated areas of Castle Valley and other sensitive portions of Grand County. Hopes that this County Council would actively protect some of the most beautiful portions of Grand County (and members—both in meetings and in the recall election which followed. The majority of Grand County citizens support the protection of Grand County land. It is too bad the Grand County Council forgot that courageous action could have generated just the kind of support they are looking for in November. ——Jack Campbell the world) from detrimental development were delusions. These culverts were recommended by the original drainage study. Once the culverts have been placed, gravel will be laid over these road sections. A small section of upper Cliff View will also be gravelled. These areas were targeted last spring as particularly difficult areas each year when slick mud from winter thaw makes even four-wheel-drive passage hazardous. County Council willingly gave up their choice and their constituents’ choice to protect that portion of the Colorado River. Last year when the new County Council acted affirrnatively to protect Mayberry's Orchard (with UDOT and the Nature Conservancy) Grand County residents rallied behind Council fire chief, on traffic rules governin g unmarked intersections. These laws would apply to all of the roads in Cast le Valley. According to the DMV, the car arriving first at an unmarked intersec tion has the right-of-way. This would mean that a car arriving at the comer of Buchanan and Castle Valley Drive would have the right—of-way over a car approaching on Castle Valley Drive. I had assumed that cars on CV Drive would have the right-of—way simply because CVD is so obviously the main road. Not so. Because the intersections have no “stop" of “yield” signs, they are considered unmarked and follow the above traffic laws. Given the speed most of us are travelling Castle Valley Drive, I would recommend that those entering from a side road continue yielding to the oncoming traffic. Given liability concerns, however, it is important for people to know what the law is. —Joan Sangree and upper Homestead. couple of barns, an activity center, several “bunkhouses” for employees, and some guest rental units.
