Tnesday Evening, January 20, 74. A MODEST MINORITY. Another meeting of persons claiming to represent the minority in Salt Lake Citv, was held last evening in Hussey's Hall. It was reported, by the "Committee of Conference," that fifteen gentlemen had been ' written to, for the purpose of secur ing their aid in effecting the objects desired, but that only one response had been received, which was from Mayor Wells, to the effect that the proper place to make nominations for city officer was at a convention of the people. A number of ''Resolutions" were then passed, after considerable squabbling, whish, boiled down, are in substance, that the Mayor should be petitioned to permit an investigation of the books of the Collector, Audit or and Treasurer, by a committee of forty five.- A full ticket was nominated for City Officers. A great deal f "buncombo" was indulged in about taxthe"righti". of the payers, the contempt with which their demnnds had been received, and the necessity fur help from Congress. Seeing that the city records are not locked up from the public eye, but rpen for inspection at proper lours, the resolutions are nothing but "gas," of a very poor quality. And seeing that the city officers are elected by the majority of votes at the polls, and not by "fifteen prominent and influential citizens," the labors of the committee were as ridiculous as they were fruitless.. Frothing about congressional interference, if the majority do not incorporate in their ticket the nominations of the minority, is all of a piece with the general threatening and bjuster of the clique, of disturbers who want to fill all the offices and run the whole machine of government in the Territory. Imagine a handful of Democrats declaiming and. bceathing oat threats, and invoking the aid of the Government, because the Re publican majority in a city would not pat upon their ticket and rote into office their political enemies. Would they not become the laughiag stock of the country f Yet this is Mw-rmo- - non-Morm- - just the position of the agitators at Salt Lake. The rights of minorities should be respected. JJut who can respect a knot of abusive, g politi . are wuo to oDUin sencuung ciaus, power over the majority for private ends and personal profit? How can the majority be expected to resign their legitimate position and rightful potf jrj, iut) t'ao bauds of men who .have hitherto acted in a spirit of t!ie bitterest hostility to them aud their most cherished institutions? Who demand everything, hut yield noth ing? Who propose "compromise," but mean surrender? Who talk lamb and act tiger? Who pretend amity while they plot fcr war? We aro for fair play aud equal rights. We are opposed to sectional hate and religious prejudice. We would like to see all parties and opin- ions properly represented in all de partments of Government. But if the people of Salt Lake City should combine with a few selfish intriguers to hand over the balance of power to their avowed enemies, we should think they had gone crazy, or were so wilfully stupid that they deserved to be tied hand and foot and placed office-seekin- . . completely at the mercy of the cormorants who have marked them for a prey. KEARJET'S if The vacsnt scat the late Judge Chase is the bete noir of President Grant, whose perylexities have aroused him to assume something like an independent position. He has shown of late a recalcitrant disposition, and the subserviency to party behests which has hitherto marked his official conduct, o the amazement of his followers, has yielded to a disregard of political tyranny. Foiled in se curing the confirmatin of his boon friend from the backwoods of Oregon, on account of alleged incompetency, he selected as the recipient of his distinguished consideration the ablest jurist in the land. But Gushing knew too much for the pigmies whose petty malice sought gratification in compassing his overthrow, and the ghost of the rebellion Was invoked to shake its gory locks at the rash man, who thought in honoring a great man he was complying with the unanimous wish of the nation.
