Show HAD NO OBJECTION Neither Chinese Nor Portuguese Object Ob-ject to the Proposed Hawaiian Treaty Washington June 22 Neither the Chinese nor the Portuguese minister has made a protest against the Hawaiian Ha-waiian treaty of annexation nor has either of them received any insmu ttons on the subjeCt from his government govern-ment Viscount De Santa Bryso the Portuguese Por-tuguese minister says he has no doubt but that the Portuguese colony in Hawaii Ha-waii wihi be as well protected under the United States laws as under the present regime on the islands and he sees no reason why Portugal should lodge a protest against the treaty The Chinese minister is inclined tt > think that the clause in the treaty excluding ex-cluding the further immigration of I Chinese to the islands is unnecessary as the exclusion act would apply to them if our jurisdiction were extended to Hawaii China has assented to the policy of exclusion and sees no necessity neces-sity for comment on that score There are about 25000 Chinamen in Hawaii |
