Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS - Thursday, February 11, 1988 - Page Six At Fredonia High these past two weeks, lots of fun and exciting things have taken place. The band and chorus went to Flagstaff, Ariz. on Jan. 30, for solo-anensemble competitions. They did a good job. The juniors are busily preparing for their prom. They have some neat ideas. Since they are such a hardworking class, it should be a big success. The cheerleaders are sponsoring a Sweehearts Ball. It will be held on Feb. 20 after the basketball game. A photographer will be at the dance to take pictures. Get your sweetheart and be sure to be there. The mighty Lynx wrestlers traveled all the way to Yuma, Ariz., for district matches. John Sadlier took first and Matt Eberhard took second. Congratulations, guys! Next stop - State. Our Academic Decathlon team consisting of Gayle Elliott, Rebecca Winward, Christy Bundy, Melinda Ford and Jolea Schreiner, traveled to Eagar, Ariz. this weekend for the annual regional event. There were 20 schools entire Overall region of the Outstanding Essay. Melinda Ford placed second in the interview competition and received a medallion. All of Fredonias team members made a superior showing in the competitive events. Bill Herr and Nedra Heaton accompanied the students. On Friday, Jan. 29, the Mayer Wildcats came to Lynx country for basketball with our girls and boys teams. The scores in the boys Varsity were: Lynx 50, Wildcats 46. It was Lynx 56 and Wildcats 40 in the boys Junior Varsity game. In the girls Varsity game dthe final scores were Mayer 67, Fredonia 55. In the girls Junior Varsity game it was Mayer 42, Fredonia 41. On Saturday the Lynx traveled to St. Michaels where our girls Junior Varsity lost 43 to 24. The girls Varsity won, however, 50 to 49 and the boys Varsity also won 43 to 41. This past weekend we met the Mayer Wildcats again, only this time on their turf. The results were not as impressive as before. Final scores were: Boys Varsity Mayer 84, Fredonia 60; Boys Junior Varsity Fredonia 35, Mayer 34; girls Junior Varsity, Fredonia 20, Mayer 22; Girls Varsity, Fredonia 45, Mayer 57. This weekend the mighty Lynx will hit the road for an overnight trip to play Ashfork on Friday and Seligman on Saturday. Good luck, Lynx! represented. The Fredonia AD team participated in the following events: essay, interview, speech, economics, fine arts, language, literature, math, science, social science, history and a super quiz on the history of Flight. The next day he sends the sixth graders out in groups of four or five KeriLynn Heaton In Dixie Play A former Fredonia student has won a place in the cast of the Unsinkable Molly Brown to be performed this month at Dixie College in St. George. Kerilyn Heaton, daughter of Mel and Rosemary Heaton of Moccasin, Ariz., will act the role of a saloon girl in the musical comedy. Heaton is a student at Dixie College. The Unsinkable Molly Brown is scheduled to open Tuesday, Feb. 16, and will run through Feb. 20. The cast of 30 is directed in the play by C. Paul Anderson. Tickets are on sale at Dixie College's Fine Arts Center ticket office. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. to ride the bus and take notes about what they see. Hayes says administrators dont like that exercise. They say he can't do it because the kids are alone-- no adults, no control. Of course not, he responds. The whole purpose is to teach responsibility. Whether or not you agree with Hayes, t he man knows a lot about young people. Hes been teaching since 1936, and at 72 he looks like a TV star. Hes giving retirement no thought. He recalled a father who came in to talk about his sons problems in math- -a student. stressed-ou- t Hayes told the father that the important thing wasnt math. The teacher told him to work on making the boy secure and let me worry about the math." In a recently-publishearticle Hayes says his students discover things for themselves. They do a lot of work with computers and calculators, but they also study number facts. He warns students that the batteries may go dead. Pleasant; Robert Land, Fillmore; Bryan Conklin, Beaver, and Todd Green, Salt Lake City. Cheerleader Coach Gaye Thurston notes that the Thunderbird squad was the only Western squad ranked in the top 15 colleges and universities competing in the annual contest. College, Mississippi Clinton, Miss., won the UCA contest followed by Slippery Rock Univers ity, Slippery Rock, Pa., and Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Ala. Paris, Texas, the school closest geographically to SUSC, finished tenth. SUSC finished 15th in Division II UCA competition two years ago and 21st last year. Every year they get better, Thurston said. Theyre a organized the Reflections Program at the elementary school. Art, photography, literature and music were areas of competition. Each of these students received a superior rating for their efforts. ORDERVILLE NEWS I Visiting at the Joseph Bolander was Pearls sister, Evelyn, and husband of northern Utah. The survey showed that the district has 9 high school classes with at least 30 students. UEA conducts an annual class in public schools size survey throughout the state Results of the survey showed a state-wid15 percent increase from last year in the number of middle, junior high and high schools with at least 30 students. The reason for the increases in class sizes is the states revenue problem," said UEA President Jim Campbell. The more large classes we have in Utah schools, the less this state pays for each students education. "More students can mean less learning opportunities for a class, he said. Noting that Utah class sizes have been the largest in the nation for years. Campbell said this years findings in the class size survey tellus the chances of changing that ranking for the better are remote. UEA conducted the class size survey Oct. 1, 1987 with 630 of 647 schools responding to the 17 grandson born to Brigham and Jeanne Johnson of St. George. He has two sisters to welcome him. On January 30 at J.V.s Cafe in Orderville birthday dipper was held honoring Laurence Esplin on his 94th birthday, Jan. 29. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. Larry Esplin of Cedar City, the LaNard Johnsons, A.B. Levangers, Richard Esplins, I. Mack Esplins and John Esplins, all of Orderville and Mrs. VeRene Tait of Fredonia. Mahala Sorensen spent five days in the Kanab hospital for adjust Provo on Friday and visited the Alden Merrills and James Thorups, Mr. Thorup recently had surgery. Mr. Thorup was bishop and Bob was a counselor when they both lived in Fontana, Calif., years ago.
