Show RESCUED FROM THE VERY W DEATH ASTORIA. On, Nov. 13. Rescued from the very jaws of death, after a battle with the elements extending over nearly thirty" hours, tho lumber-laden and passenger-carrying steam schooner Washington, Wash-ington, which struck on Peacock spit early yesterday afternoon, is being towed to this port tonight. Taking advantage of a cessation of the gale late today, tho Columbia bar tug Tatoosh, Captain Charles T. Bailey, slipped in close to the Washington and after several attempts at-tempts got a Hue aboard. The rescue of the Washington and her passengers and crew, numbering nearly i fifty persons, was dramatic. Hundreds of persons, who had gathered on the beach in the early morning11 hours and had watched the vessel .all day. momentarily momen-tarily expecting to see her crushed on the rocks near North Head and her passengers pas-sengers and crew swept inlo the sea. were overjoyed when they saw the Tatoosh Ta-toosh reach her side. A great cheer went up and like an echo came back the Joyful shout of the passengers huddled on tho Washington's deck. But for the dogged persistence of Captain Cap-tain Bailey of the Tatoosh darkness probably prob-ably would have spelled the fate of the Washington. Drifting holplessly. pounded pound-ed by seas which carried her nearer and nearer the rocks. It seemed that no human hu-man agency could savo her. All day the tug boats hovered In the vicinity of tlie disabled vessel, unable to approach near enough to be of assistance assist-ance until, with darkness fast approaching. approach-ing. Ihe Tatoosh saw her opportunity and darted in lo the rescue. It was, reported today that at least two of the crew of the Washington hnd been swept from her decks inlo the sea and drowned, but the facta will not be known until Ihe Tatoosh arrives here with her tow. It Is not certain that the Tatoosh wl'l come Inlo nort tonight. The weather is thick and Captain Bailey may decide to lie outside. |
