Depressive disorders Depressive disorders come in different forms just as do other illnesses such as heart disease The three most prevalent forms are major depression dysthymia and bipolar disorder Following is a definition of different types of depressive disorders Clinical depression: Feelings are out of proportions to any external causes Many things in life can cause sadness but people who are not depressed manage to cope with these things without becoming incapacitated chronic sympDysthymia: Less severe type of depression and involves toms that do not disable but keep you from functioning at full steam or from feeling good Sometimes people with dysthy mia also experience major depressive episodes Manifested by a combination of symptoms that interfere with Major depression: the ability to work sleep eaL and enjoy activities These episodes are disabling and can occur once twice or several times in a lifetime Endogenous depression: Occurs w ithout a particular bad evern stressful situation or other definite outside cause being present in the person s life Usually responds well to medication however some authorities do not consider this to be a useful diagnostic category A typical depression: Not an official A typical depression generally informally diagnostic category but it is often discussed has increased appetite and sleeps more than able to enjoy pleasurable circumstances despite being unable to seek out such circumstances Despite its name a typical depression may in fact be more common that the other kind Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): A pattern of depressive illness in which symptoms recur every winter It is often accompanied by such symptoms as mark decrease in energy increased need for sleep and carbohy drate craving Photo therapy - morning exposure to bright full spectrum light - can often be dramatically helpful As you can see depression comes in many forms Only a person trained in these disorders can give you diagnosis and treatment At Journey of Hope we give support and education to families who have a loved one who suffers from major mental illness If you are having a difficult time coping with the special needs of
