Warriors victorious By Glen Adams Beacon Sports Weber High came to the State Tournament with one idea in mind, and that was to prove that they are definately contenders for the State Championship! They have the desire to win. Here we have a team who was record riding sky high with a only to see the team lose three out of their last four Region One games to finish second to Roy. But on top of that, they lost their leading scorer Steve Trawick. Thats got to do something to your team mentally. Weber Well, certainly rebounded from all their bad luck, as they took out their frustration on Jordan High Tuesday afternoon, to score an victory, and impressive advance in the state playoffs. The Warriors will go against Orem, (who dethroned Skyline as the State champs) Thursday evening at 8:10 p.m. in the University of Utah Special Events Center. The winner will advance to the semi- i I 10-- 0 64-5- 2 finals. Weber with their intimidating man to man defense held Jordan scoreless in the first five minutes of the game to take a commanding, comfortable lead Jordan, trying to get something going against the never say die Warriors, got themselves into foul trouble early in the first period and Weber found themselves in the bonus situation. Finally Jordan guard Doug Price got things rolling hitting the first two points. Weber shot 56 percent in the first period from the field, putting in nine of 16 shots and were two of four from the line. Jordan did manage to score 12 points in the period, but they shot a miserable 29 percent from the field, (five of 17): Most of Jordans first period shots, were from the outside, because of their failure to penetrate Webers defense, and they found themselves down at 12-- i 0. Conollys Warriors also finding foul trouble, pulled starters and replaced them with fresh people off the bench. All toll in the game, Weber had 11 different men playing for them, and out of those 11, 9 men scored. Hows that for relying on your bench? A lot of people wondered why Conolly w ulu make such a move. The reason was this, give his starters a rest because of the emotional impact of the game and to give them a more experienced oriented team. to Jordan did manage capitalize on some of Webers tactics, but the Warriors held their composure and worked the ball together as a team, passing off when they needed to. led the scoring for his team with 14 points, came alive in the final period scoring eight points, three buckets and two foul shots. The Beetdiggers had chances to pull closer, but they couldnt cash in on Webers shooting dropped drastically in the second period by connecting on only three of 11 shots from the field for 27 percent. Webers breaks were at the foul line scoring seven of 11 attempts, six of those being scored by Ray Coleman. Coleman was the leading scorer in the game with 17 points, 11 of his points came from the line, missing only one free throw. Jordan with every opportunity in this period to do something, 28 percent, and themselves deeper into foul trouble as the half ended with Jordan Weber still on top, could only shoot dig 33-2- hit five of 18 from the field and were four for five from the line to close out the half. In third period action, Jordan couldnt have been much worse from the field, shooting only a measly 12 percent. The only thing that kept them in the game at this point was the six points they scored on free throws, out of ten attempts. (Photo by Glen Adorns) The basketball team at Weber High School has been getting a lot of recognition at school and around the area, but they're nnt the only team that's going to stale the Warrior Girl's Basketball team D too. Weve had a good season, said girl's coach, Jan Keim We dont have a lot of height, but were quick and that's what helped is in in our season. Miss Keim said that the tallest girl on the team was only five feet, nine inches. The lady Warriors will play Kearns High School Monday at 2.30 12-- 4 p.m. "The team next year will be one of rebuilding and that's what we're going to do to succeed, she continued. We re losing six seniors this year and four of them have been starters Janice Garner. Debbie Vest, Becky Jackson and Karla Kirby." "The problem we face at Weber High is the stigma that the girls hue of thinking that women involved in athletics are jocks," commented Miss Keim. She said that the girls involved in sports at Weber are able to handle themselves well on the court, but then they also act like a lady. Most of the boys at Weber High School have accepted girls athletics, but its the girls that believe womens sports are bad that are causing the problems," continued Miss Keim. v Miss Keim said the the quality of womens athletics have cd and that people are coming to see the games because they are worth watching.
