Show W VV’TMI 'Wy’pyir wmrtivw VT--e my’ Crossword 12 Classifieds 14 Spring is here with its plant diseases By Mark Anderson s pring must really be hoe Unpredictable weather warm sunny days followed by the occasional snowstorm and the first signs of leaves on the trees always herald the arrival of this season Before long more leaves will be popping on the trees Blossoms will soon follow Cold wet weather usually brings on numerous diseases includ- ing aspen leaf spot (which infects the leaves of some poplar trees) anthrac-nos- e (which has affected maple trees the last few years) and fireblight (which damages many flowering trees) The beat time to control these three diseases is early when the fust signs of life appear on the affected trees Now is also the time to start thinking about controlling crab and plum production on your long-await- ed Orlando is the perfect place to bring your family even if they're grown flowering trees before they hit full bloom With : a little york " and a small investment you can save yourself a lot of trouble (and time) later on this summer If you have ever dealt with aspen trees in your yard you know what aspen leaf spot looks like because if left untreated quakies will get the disease Fungal spores spread by wind and rain infect the leaves in early spring causing dark brown flecks to develop Gradually the flecks turn to larger spots sometimes covering the entire leaf surface Often many of the quaking aspen in Logan canyon fail to turn yellow in the fall because the leaves have already turned black and fallen off The occasional infection of aspen trees will ' not cause permanent damage but if it occursyear after year the tree could eventually die A spray of Banner or Daconil applied at bud break and repeated at intervals of 4 days during the ' wet spring weather will help destroy the fungal spores before they damage the trees Banner a new systemic fungicide made available to the home owner last year makes an excellent choice since it works systemically to control the disease for 6 weeks Dry weather slows the spread of the spores so once the weather warms and the rains slow (which normally happens around the first of June) then discontinue spraying Also to reduce the possibility of infection from year to year be sure to rake' up and compost or discard all the fallen leaves in the fall Avoid sprinkler irrigation of the foliage when possible as it helps spread the fungus spores Plant and prune the trees so that air can freely circulate ' around the trees and reduce humidity levels Iron deficiency increases' the ' aspen s susceptibility to leaf spot so take care to supplement your trees with chelated iron or iron tree implants in the spring and during the year when necessary The last few years an uncommon disease has damaged maple leaves called anthracnose Other trees such as sycamore oak and dogwood are susceptible to this same disease but it seems to have invaded maples more than any other One telltale sign of the disease is dead dry tissue in between the veins of die leaves It does not effect die of the leaves ' it occurs first in thetips center so it is easily distinguishable from scorch or leaf bum frotn drought or sun expo- - By Allred ' e’vc always thought of Orlando as a good place to take your kids but now we see a national magazine saying it’s one of the top five places in America to rare your kids A new issue of CHILD magazine rates 10 major cities as best for families based on such factors as health care air quality schools and affordability Denver rates No 1 and Orlando No 5' (Salt Lake City doesn’t make the list) But Orlando is also still a great place to visit with the kids — or without them It’s maybe an even better place to take adults My wife and I recently took the “kids” bur grown son Mark and his wife Karen on -- their first visit there Bypassing Disney’s Magic Kingdom we spent a favorite spots Epcot Cenday in one of our ter After our first visit to Epcot back in the 80s Theresa said she was saying to herself “If (could I’d like to take every one of our grandchildren here” On this trip we spent another day at Kennedy Space Center and — back to Disney — one at Animal Kingdom Orlando has a lot of other great attractions — Sea World Disney Water Parks MGM and Universal Studios Cypress Gardens and die rest but they will just haveto wait for another time Since it was now 2001 it seemed an appropriate time for a space odyssey A visit to Kennedy Spice Center soon demonstrated that the space folks were thinking the same way making reference to some of the scenarios of the fanciful 1968 Stanley Kubrick movie “2001: A Space Odyssey” We just missed the launch of Discovery on its voy- age to Alpha the new international space station orbiting high above Earth But as we visited Kennedy we got progress reports on the docking changing the crew arid unloading five tons of goods from die sup- ply module Leonardo and then filling it with' waste materials to bring back In the overlook to the “clean room” we saw compo-nents for future delivery being readied including Raphael and Donatello the other two Italian-mad- e supply modules like Leonardo The guide told us the Italian space agency built the three modules named them after great Italian artists and gave them to the U S space agency NASA appreciated the gift but ran intoa little policy problem NASA has a rule not all-ti- Photos courtesy of J R Allred Street performers such as the Krystos above and the ‘statue at right provide endless entertainment for children of all ages as they wander the Epoot Center grounds Orlando's other attractions such as the Kennedy Space Center 10-1- and Animal Kingdom are equally appealing to adults and children -
