Show March 24, Order of HILL TOP TIMES 1978 t Gig Suord installs General Ooberi J. Page 15 Dixon By TSgt. Art Barnes TAC Directorate of Information "An airman among airmen" was the title accorded Gen. Robert J. Dixon at Langley AFB, Va. March 10 when noncommissioned officers of the Tactical Air Command (TAC) installed him in the Order of the Sword. The guest of honor humbly began, "It matters not whom you first honored, but that you keep it up. Officers. . . are learning from NCOs. There's no honor higher (than the Order of the Sword), and what you've made it. The tradition of this ceremony honoring the TAC commander dates to 12th century Sweden where military troops honored their leaders by presenting them a sword as a symbol of truth, justice and power rightfully used. "You are my peers," General Dixon told the NCOs. "I've worked for and with you for 36 years. We share a bond of professionalism. We've come a long way together in TAC in lf four and years. We command a lot of respect from other (major air) commands." Some 275 NCOs and senior staff officers attended the ceremony to present General Dixon with with an Order of the Sword coat of arms plaque and other symbols to honor him as an esteemed leader. half-yea- r e command of During the general's TAC, he has made great contributions to the prestige of the NCO corps, according to CMSgt. Lewis C. Covington, coor- one-ha- a strain what we're doing, stressing the troops. But I've found if you give a guy a choice he'll do twice the job than if you told him to do it. I command no one; I simply ask." The general explained, "It's four-and-on- dinator of senior enlisted advisors to the TAC commander and sergeant major of the TAC Order of the Sword committee. "Without your concern we wouldn't be where we are today," said Chief Covington of General Dixon. "You are a great airman." General Dixon, a veteran of more than 36 years military service in the Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Air Force, U.S. Air Force and its forerunner, the Army Air Force, is scheduled to retire April 30. Since assuming command of TAC in October 1973, he has publicly championed the cause of enlisted members and combatted the recent perception of an erosion of military life. Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force Robert D. Gaylor, a guest at the ceremony, continued the "airman among airmen" theme. Chief Gaylor said he knew General Dixon as a legend before he personally met him last September. "After speaking to him for 45 minutes," Chief Gaylor recalled, "General Dixon asked me 'Chief, do you know what your job is? It's to take care of people.' At the moment I knew this is a man I could work for. He was my kind of general." General Dixon surmised that if he hadn't asked, TAC never would have accomplished such programs as Red Flag combat aircrew training at Nellis AFB, Nev., and the Black Flag system of generating sorties at wartime rates in several TAC units to practice combat tasking during peacetime. "When we ask people to perform a mission, we have to get out of the way to keep from being trampled." After the presentations, General Dixon was escorted about the ballroom of the Langley NCO Open Mess where he warmly greeted each person present who represented all TAC enlisted members in honoring the retiring TAC commander. & Saturday 3 bedrooms, 1 Large kitchen, all built-ins- , baths, fireplace, deck and a double sized garage. 139 South 400 West, Kaysville. $62,500.
