An extremely cogent statement by Joan Wilcox, "Must a Woman Follow a Man" Signpost, Tuesday, April 17, 1984) wherein she addresses the sexual bias so frequently encountered, is followed by an ad in the "Classified Ads" that must be the ultimate in sexism. An attorney is advertising that a couple wants to adopt a child. From long experience in child welfare, most often such ads merely want the preganant woman to give up her child. Often some reward is given as part of an exchange. Basically, the women is reduced to an incubation device. The psycho-social needs, the planning with alternatives, the provision of an emotional support system and the help so often needed after delivery are simply not available. In short, carry the baby, deliver, give it up and goodbye. Oh, be sure to have a perfect child. A child with problems may not be acceptable and then the mother will have to make other arrangements. Surely, Signpost, greater awareness of what is presented may be of value to your readers. Dr. Rex R.
