Show GOVERNOR CALLS FOR volunteers utah rational national guard to lie ile put on war pivoting 11 the Go governor of the state of altah A proclamation whereas every thoughtful citizen by reason of the events ol of overshadowing importance which are being written into tho the history of our time appreciating the de destiny of this nation lu in the influence ini luence of world affairs and as the bearer ol of tile the torch of liberty justice and equality to all peoples is deeply sensible of the obligation resting upon the able bodied men of military age to share the burdens as well as the advantages liberties and opportunities guaranteed to them by the constitution and whereas the conviction must rest with every patriotic american that in ili order to defend tile the principles upon which this government Is founded there must exist in addition to the standing army and the navy an organized disciplined trained and efficient body of citizenry armed and equipped lind and with the present ability to do and whereas it has been made plain by our own history that untrained men sent forth to battle whether or not they are physically able are committed to needless sacrifice of life and well being that the nation is exposed to dangers and disadvantages on the field of battle it the tha organization of its forces Is delayer until hostilities are actually begun and whereas the present international situation unmistakably indicates the of this governments government a being called upon to m uster muster its land and sea forces in defense of its national honor and to champion in behalf of humanity and civilization the cause of right and justice and in such event this state would be required to present its full quota of able bodied and trained men tor for service now I 1 therefore I 1 simon bamberger governor of the state of utah do by proclamation call upon the able bodied men of tills this not exempted by law and of mill tary age to discharge one of the obligations of citizenship by voluntarily enlisting in tile the national guard in thus prominently bringing to notice this obligation which every elector assumes as lie ho exercises ilia his right of suffrage an obligation to which ever native american is born and which litch ever naturalized citizen should leel it an honor to accept public notice Is hereby given that the state of utah by enactment of the twelfth legislature has brought its military code into consonance the national defense act as approved june 3 1916 whereby the national guard of the several states NA was W brought under federal control Ar armories morles are maintained in ili slit silt lake ogden logan clovo mantl mount pleasant pleas int tnt and ephraim Ephr alm where full information pertaining to the service may be obtained in order therefore that tho the national guard of the state of utan may be at all ready to respond to a call for its service as a part of tile tha defensive force of tile tha united states and in order that the national guard of tilts this may ile be at all times prepared to render efficient and honorable service when so ailed out by ill the a president and congress I 1 urge men of military age within this state not now members of this force or of citizen soldiery to immediately discharge dla the obligation that is theirs that they may to do their just part in ili upholding holding tip the dignity and honor of their conanon country pre preserve gerve the traditions of tile the state and do honor to themselves in testimony whereof bot I 1 have hereunto set my iny hand and caused to be affixed the great seal of the state of utah done at salt lale lake city the capitol tilts this day of march a d 1917 SIMON damberger DAM BEnGER governor by the governor Il harden larden bennion secretary of state |
