Dr. Fred Baker, Utah State University Extension forester, says the Forest Service has responded to some critics that taxpayers were subsidizing the tim- ber industry through below-cos- t timber sales. The service, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has countered by saying that the Yield Act Multiple of 1960 and the National Forest Management Act of 1976 direct Use-Sustai- ned that the 155 national forests be managed for a variety of benefits, not just the production of timber. "Maximizing cash profit is not the legally prescribed objective of national forest management, the Tooele made a clean sweep of top honor's at the Utah Wildlife Federation convention two weeks ago. In the past six years, money received has exceeded the costs of timber-sale- s programs by $5.5 billion. Baker points out that some timber sales are made to improve the quality of the trees that remain. Other sales attempt to salvage trees injured by fire, diseases or insects. In Utah, many sales attempt to salvage timber killed by the mountain pine beetle. Other Imreportant uses of timber-sale- s ceipts are to improve wildlife, range land and recreation.
