NOTICE OF REPUBLICAN The National Foundation for Poliomyelitis has recently issued its 1959 "Statistical Review," of the poliomyelitis situation for the years 1955 to 1959 inclusive. Figures relating to the total incidence of the disease, the proportion of paralytic cases and the effect of the Salk polio vaccine are not only of vital interest to the medical profession but to every Individual. The proportion of paralytic cases is alarming. During this period, with the exception of 1955 and 1957, more than half the cases were parlytic and during those years almost half the cases developed paralysis. Salk Vaccine Effective In the nation there were 8,577 total cases during 1959 and 5,694 of these were paralytic. The high incidence of paralysis is attributed by authorities to the fact that not a large enough proportion of the population has taken advantage of the Salk vaccine as a means of preventing the disease or reducing the hazard of paralysis that may result from it. In 1959 infants and children under 5 years of age show the highest paralytic hospital admission rates.
