Show c = MR MCKNIGHT AGAIN The Distinguished Barrister Found Guilty of Assault With n Deadly Weapon James McKnight attorney and coun cellor at law was again the subject of proceedings in the Federal court room this morning figuring on this occasion as defendant in a case in which the people I of tho Territory were plaintiffs McKnight was charged with committing an assault with a deadly weapon upon tho person of Mrs > Bevis in January 1881 The public will doubtless remember the details of the affair McKnight undertook to eject Mrs Bevis from premises for which he was acting as agent and it was alleged attacked her with a sharp cane inflicting serious injuries about the breast The case came up for trial this morning morn-ing Judge McBride appearing for the defense de-fense and Mr Dickson prosecuting The following jurors were sworn J D VanTassel W H Knox Robert H Wheeler John L W Mecham A J Pendleton John D Spencer J R Matthews Mat-thews T E Jeremy James E Paine Edward Rotch John McKellar G D Schell Edward Bird The testimony in the case was all taken and the case submitted to the jury at noon That body returned promptly into court at 2 oclock and returned 1 verdict of guilty as charged in the indictment Sentence will be pronounced tomorrow morning at which time Judge McBride will probably move for a new trial The penalty for this offense is imprisonment imprison-ment in the Penitentiary for not more than two years or a fine of not more than II 1000 It is not likely that the imprisonment imprison-ment penalty will be imposed |
