In addition to containing fires on these public lands, BLM has provided immense support to other agencies to contain fires both within and outside of Utah. According to BLM state director James Parker, Utah BLM personnel have spent 1,280 man days in support of fire suppression for other agencies. This does not include time for fire crews or persons actually fighting fires, but only those in support or overhead positions. In addition BLM has furnished aircraft, supplies, and other equipment such as fire tankers. There have been 68;,678 fires on BLM, Forest Service and National Park service lands, according to Jack Wilson of the BLM. About 30,000 men and women, as well as 27.5 million pounds of supplies, have been used in fire suppression efforts, Wilson said. Total costs are estimated at about $300 million. Its that time of year again, and sportsmen are bringing home the game they harvest during the current hunting seasons. Garth Carter, Division of Wildlife Resources, recommends the following recipe for jerky. He says its One of die best. Venison jerky can be made from the best cuts or the scrap pieces of your big game animal. No mater how much you make, it will be eaten within a few days unless of course, you stash some away. Before beginning the jerky process you should have the following ingredients on hand: 1 12 pounds of venison 1 teaspoon liquid smoke 13 tsp. garlic powder 13 tsp. pepper 1 tsp. monosodium glutamate tsp. onion powder cup soy sauce 14 cup worchestershire sauce 1 1V4 Trim all far from the meat and slice into strips about 1N4 inch thick. If meat is partially frozen, it will slice more easily. Always try to slice with the grain. Mix liquid smoke, garlic powder, pepper, onion powder, soy sauce and worchestershire sauce in a large jar and blend well. Add meat to the mixture and allow to marinate six to ten hours in the refrigerator. Turn occasionally. Drain well on paper towels and spread on a rack. Place n a 125 to 145 degree oven for 8 to 12 hours or until dry. Leave the oven door ajar during the entire cooking process. Small treasures: Microscopic diamonds older than the sun and the planets have been found imbedded in three different kinds of meteorites. Chemically unaltered since before the solar system was formed four and a half billion years ago. International Wildlife magazine reports that the diamonds may be the oldest particles ever found. They are so small that trillions of them could fit on the head of a pin. Orange Aid: Theres a new killer chemical on the horizon, devastating to household pests, but apparently safe for humans, animals and the environment. And it smells great. According to National Wildlife magazine, the magic ingredient is citrus oil from orange peels. Researchers have found it to be valuable replacement for poison in killing houseflies, fleas and fire ants. i H Thera are eoven difference! In i It j the eecond picture.
