Those concerned with this matter are not seeking to hamstring academic freedom, or prevent open discussion of the mcYits and demerits of any economic system. They are, instead, casting light on abuses of academic freedom which would undermine all freedom. A list of textbooks which follow', in whole or in part, the totalitarian line would he long. As an example, the high schools of Oregon and other states have an official text on economics and government which endorses socialized medicine, advocates gov- ernment ownership of utilities, and attacks private insurance and banking. In one chapter, it makes this revealing statement: Would the free enterprise system necessarily be destroyd if the government w ere accented as a full partner in the economic processes of tne country? Government activity as such is no inherent denial of the principles of the free enterprise system. The government might extend its act ivities as employer, as investor, even as owner, and thus become a necessary balance wheel without interfering with the freedom and the initiative of the system of free enterprise. . . That is as logical as saying that a cat and a mouse should be able to live together in peace and harmony. A government may conceivably set out to become a partner in industry. But it always ends by swallowing the rest of the partners and establishing a political monopoly. Socialism and individual freedom cannot exist together. One must destroy the other, and when all the resources of government are marshaled to that end, the result is inevitable. Wasatch.
