the city co ancil met last evening in regular session at 7 30 A full fall council waa was present minutes were read and approved the following petitions were read and stad acted upon IV B wedell owner of lots 15 and 18 6 block 5 orchard grove addition stating a bouse house was situated on lot 10 16 which in cage case of proper adjustment of street line on fourth street mast must be removed asking that the line be moved 10 feet north and offering lor for the 16 feet thus taken frum from the present street line committee on oil streets fred J kissel co and others that sidewalks on wall north of depot t be put in passable condition committee on streets joseph and others for extension of sewers and surface drain from the intersection of grant and twenty sixth to sewer already constructed ted the council to appoint a committee to investigate a all matters touching such over charges having power to call witnesses take proof etc the committee to make the investigation thorough and report as the city council in iri rejecting the recommendation of your police commission relative to the removal of mr L W tackett has had the unavoidable effect of militating a against the discipline of the police department par part ment and has placed myself as the elected head of that department in a light of humiliation before the public mr tackett made certain grave charges which it if they had been sustained would have been a dl disgrace e grace to the city government and a d dishonor to me as an official those charges were disproved and by mr air tacketts Tac ketts own testimony before the police commission were shown to be without any real foundation why then should be be rewarded and sustained and I 1 be ignored and humiliated gentlemen I 1 maintain that mr tackett was guilty of conduct unbecoming an officer of this city to uphold him would be an encouragement to insubordination and an admission that paid servants of this municipality may attack the fair repute of this city with impunity I 1 therefore respectfully ask that L IV tackett be removed from the position which he now holds in this cites employ J W METCALF mr cannon moved that L IV tackett be removed from the position he now holds he ile was not the jailor but the night turnkey appointed by the council two years ago mr lundy opposed it on the ground that the charges were not an sufficient flici ent an and d thought there was something behind the matter that needed deeper investigation than bad had been given others spoke on the matter and nd considered that the petition of the marshal should be heeded while mr allison looked over the petition mr spencer moved adjournment in ent the motion was lost by the following vote ayes lundy spencer graves and allison nays naye shurtliff calvert cannon and elliot question on the motion was called mr allison vehemently opposed the m motion othon it I 1 the council wished to remove mr tackett without ut giving any reason it could do so but not on any grave charge mr elliot would vote for the removal as he thought the marshal had bad himself the power to appoint or remove a turnkey again abe question was called cal lel ag again a n discussion began
