Show KEARNS ALARMED. Senator Kearns and Lieutenant Lippman are now thoroughly alarmed over the prospect of being be-ing side-tracked in their own districts'. They lay a major poition of the blame upon John" Ax-ton, Ax-ton, father of the Reverend John T. Axton, for whom Kearns, as a reward for a legislative vote, secured the appointment as a chaplain in the army. Mr. Axton, who is foreman under Superintendent Super-intendent of Streets Condle, was summoned into the presence of Kearns and Lippman and called to account for his actions. It is understood, however, how-ever, that the senator received scant satisfaction, as Mr. Axton had already read Thursday's issue IHHHHHHHHHHIHHnDi of the Tribune, in which the Shifty Senator an- H nounced that he was taking no hand in municipal IH politics, that he had not entered any candidates H for mayor and would not withdraw one. The re- l 1 1 suit of the primaries in the Kearns districts" will i jH now be watched with added interest. , M The statement Of Mr. Kearns in his morning '' H and evening organs that he is not inteiested jn ll the success of any mayoralty candidate is regard- 1 ed in political circles as an admission of defeat, H as it is well known that from the beginning.it H has been his aim to elect a mayor who would con- M vert the patronage of the various departments H into an adjunct of the Kearns machine to aid in, jH the capture of the important convention of next M year, and that when Knox appeared to bo doomed i M to defeat Odell was the next choice as his muni- H cipal representative. The mprning organ an- H nounce that the gubernatorial question is domi- H nating the municipal contest, which is merely an 1 H 'attempt to draw the fire from Kearns and his sen- s H atorial ambitions. How does the morning organ H happen to overlook the fact that every prospective j H candidate for United States senator, save t H Kearns alone, is included among the supporters H of the candidacy of Mr. James? It is scarcely H likely that Messrs. Sutherland, Salisbury and Mc- H Cornick would lend their assistance to any can- H didate who is pledged to use the muriicipal ma- wM chinery in the interests of Senator Kearns' sen- H atorial aspirations. Their support of James is H based upon the fact that they are thoroughly (H convinced that he is the only candidate in the H field who is free from entanglements and unal- )i WM lied with any faction. ( jjl & & & f H This recalls the disaster which Kearns en- j , H countered in his own district a year ago. The H Sutherland forces completely routed the Kearns H following, which consisted chiefly of the domestic i H servants of the Kearns and Keith mansions. The j H Shifty Senator as a result was exceedingly indig- H naht at the Mormons, who, he said, should have M supported him at the primary out of gratitude ' M for his appointment of Olvando Beebee, brother- , H in-law of Apostle Woodruff, to the office of jia- H tional bank examiner of Utah."" Mr. Beebee's ap M pointment was an illustration of the senator's M sagacity in securing official positions for men ' $M who are unfamiliar with politics and consequent- t H ly powerless to help him at critical stages of a ' M campaign. ; M |
