Show A good many people smile "when they see two newspapers both having the same ownership, both conducted with the same purposes, pitching into each 'other. But is It not possible that they tlpify the moods of the managers? In the morning they are buoyant, the light of the world looks good to them; the breakfast was satisfactory, the digestion diges-tion good, a new subscriber came in, everything is all right, why should not the journal be pleasant and patronizing? But with the evening there is the heat and burden of the day, the exchanges ""bring no comfort and no inspiration, contemporaries contempor-aries are either stupid or malicious, why should not the thoughts that depress find expression in the newspaper? The people at large may not understand the deeper mysteries, and may complain com-plain that there Is an inconsistency somewhere, but after all is it not natural for a certain order of newspaper men to T)e discontented with themselves them-selves half the time and what more natural than (hat this discontent should shine out through the types of at least one of their, newspapers? The newspapers are not only newspapers, but they are a perpetual study in philology and the occult sciences. ,, |
