providing fur this state a popular anthem The suggestion was Borne time ago made to tho Salt Iako Tribune and that newspaper nat hgreed to take the matter in hand and offer six prizes amounting to 1400 as a reward for the efforts of the com petttors It Is claimed by tho promoters of this enterprise e that there Is but one tate In the Union that nan n state anthem an-them It Is believed that within u few years almost every state will have an anthem and that there Is no good reason rea-son why Utah should he the Indt to adopt ono The conditions of tho contest which Is now on is that tho words of the anthem contain not more than five stanzas nor less than three stanzas each stanza not to exceed eight lines It Is optional with tho author whether or not there shall be tt chorus r Authors Name Safeguarded Tho manuscript must be submitted In a legible hand or typewritten and there must be no name nor address written on tho manuscript that would disclose tho identity of the author Enclosed with the manuscript must boa bo-a blank envelope containing tho name address and place of birth of the author au-thor and this envelope must be securely secure-ly sealed Manuscripts should be mailed to Anthem Contest Editor Tribune Salt Lake City and pn receipt of It nIce number num-ber will be given to the manuscript manu-script and to the envelope enclosing ho name but the name will not bo known to any one until a committee has passed on the merits of tho composition com-position and recommended twenty five compositions as suitable for entry In tho contest When these twenty five have been passed upon the selection se-lection of the most popular one will bo left to the vote of the people Neither tho Tribune nor the committee commit-tee will know who Is tho author until this selection has been made Manuscripts Manu-scripts for tho words of the anthem must reach the Salt Lake Tribune by 10 oclock p m September 1 Musicians Opportunity After the people havo decided which Is the best poem tho musicians will be called upon to fit music to the words and the contest for the music will close at 10 oclock p m Octqbcr 12 when the people will again bo asked to decide which Is the most popular music One or a dozen compositions either words or music may be submitted sub-mitted by any person The only limitation limi-tation being that tho author either bo now a citizen of Utah or a Utnhn by birth Manuscripts must be submitted separately that is two or more must not bo enclosed In the same envelope en-velope The prizes offered by the Tribune are as follows
