Show Naphi, Juab County, Utah 84648 Safety Council Advises Caution for Those Driving on Rural Roads Marriage Told But if you want a leisurely weekend or holiday with frequent halts for exploration, photography, or just plain loafing, take the back roads. "The striking scenery, the more photogenic views, and certainly the best loafing sites are often found on the back roads, suggests Leo H. Barlow, Utah vice president for Safety Councils Traffic. But before starting out on these roads, be sure you have plenty of fuel, oil, and water, Barlow advises. "In some areas spare supplies of fuel and water are for water recommended including drinking as well as for your car. Often local advice must be sought as to which back roads and remote areas are of interest to a stranger. Advice is free and almost everyone likes to give it, but it is not always reliable. Solicit it from a number of sources, preferably Ml Mr. and Mrs. Mont Blackett announce son of Mr. and Mrs. Orus Sudweeks, on Friday, April 23, 1971. A safe speed on these roads seems a snails pace compared with travel on the highway. The roads often are narrow, unpaved, and pitted with potholes or cluttered with large rocks. So dont go off at breakneck speeds even if the residents of the area appear to be doing so. They know the roads; you dont. Cars tend to form caravans on narrow roads. If you find yourself leading a caravan, pull off the road at the earliest opportunity and let following cars pass. This lets them spread out if the road permits faster travel, and you can continue sightseeing at a leisurely pace, Barlow advises. Keep your distance from the car in front While speed of the cars may be slow, clouds of dust obscure vision and hamper watching the scenery as well as the road. Sharp turns in these roads are usually unmarked, and frequently there is no around the bend. Occasional crossroads and narrow bridges appear without warning. There is nothing like the new system of superhighways for getting from your home to your favorite spot in the least amount of time.
