While most people tend to just "eyeball" the amounts that they shoveled from their driveway or brushed off the vehicle, neither is a very good way to take an "official" measurement. Distinguishing new snow from snow previously on the ground may also pres-- : ent a problem. The dilemma is solved by using a snow board - a thin piece of plywood about 12 to 15 inches on each side. The board, painted white to reflect sunshine, is laid on top of the snow so that it is level with the snow surface. Depth of new snow on the board is measured.
