important event in the history of f the cherokee Che robee indians viz the dedicatory sier services vices attending the comple tion of the indian female seminary the town of tahlequah tallequah Tahle quah is situated in a valley running almost direct north and south the hills bordering it being of a low rolling class and covered with trees in viewing view ng the city from either side at this time of year the dense foliage of the trees which are numerous throughout the town close the place from sight with the exception of a aw of the buildings building si the main street runs north and south while several shorter streets run east and west the width of the streets is five rods on the main thoroughfare ate ae built most odthe of the houses both business and private many of the residences and business houses are ola ofa of a substantial character and the town is improving and building steadily but it has yet the partial appearance of a western frontier town the population is about 1200 consisting 0 f I 1 indians half breeds negroes and white men a variety in shade and olor color C tho the place is not governed by a municipality but bithe by the district officers under the direction of the nations chief there is a square in the centre cefi j of athe the town in whip which ph stands the capitol capital building feet square in this place the legislative council of the nation meets in november of each year and enacts laws for the governing of the people the nation is divided into nine district sand the number of the present e nt council is eighteen senators and twenty four representatives on th the southwestern outskirts of the town stands the indian male seminary some four miles to the southeast is the orphan asylum these two places in connection with the new seminary are for the purpose ur e 0 of ca caring n for r an and training the the youth of the cherokee people the two first named have been in use several years and all axe are edifices which give rise to the impression that this people are providing in institutions which are and win be 66 a credit to their name and that they intend f supplying Aup plying present and abd future generations with opportunities to toj acquire the knowledge which civilized nations are in possession of thirty four years ago a female seminary was erected a few miles from tallequah tahlequah Table Tahle quah but four years since it was destroyed by fire two years ago the indian council with chief bushyhead as a leading spirit appropriated 60 for the erection of a new seminary buta but a few thousand dollars have since been given to complete com the work in april 1888 1889 the comer stone of he new building was laivand lai dand from that time till its completion the work has been rapidly going on the plan n upon pon which it was waa built aa according co adin g to the most modern style of architecture it is situated on a high knoll is three stories high and built of brick in shape of an ju the dimensions are feet north and ruuth and feet east and west with an average width of 60 feet on the southeast corner is a spire towering above all other parts of the structure the main entrance is from the south through a lar large X arched doorway with half cl circle re towers on either side A similar entrance Is provided on the east side the building entire from an n exterior view has a fine alne appearance the work and fini finishing phing in the interior axe are first class claas in every particular indeed it may maar be said that the structure in all respects would bean be an adornment in any of the cities of the united states As before stated the ath dinst was set as the day for the dedication of the building the people had bad been fully notified of the coming event and a procession and appropriate pro gramme of exercises had bad been baen previously arranged arrau ged for the day was cloudy and sultry but from early booming the people ot of the town were astir and the inhabitants of the surrounding country came flocking into th the city so tw that at the time the procession began to move the priA principal cipal street was lined with human beings and wagons and nd though the district adjoining is comparative comparativo thinly inhabited the number who gathered into the town probably 2000 showed that the people were interested in the occasion for it jq seldom that so large a number of inhabitants of this territory meet in any one place the procession was formed on the southern part of the street and as soon as an all were in line began a march of one mile to the now new senri nary on the northern part the tahlequah tallequah Tahle quah brass band headed the procession then came the free mas masons ons and odd fellows pupils of the male seminary sunday schools of the religious sects merchants advertising wagons and the balance of the public in wagons and on foot the procession was three quarters of a 9 mile in length quakers 0 on arriving at the building the public were partly provided with ith seats in front of the porches on the west side of the eastern extension the centre one of the porches was decorated with bunting and colors of the united states and was becu pie abed d by chief J B mayes assist int ant chief samuel smith the commander of fort gibson and several of the prominent men of the nation after an opening song by a select choir cho ir prayer was offered by the assistant chief A portion of the prayer was interpreted into int english anglish and the rest given in cherokee Che the chief was the first 8 speaker k e r the remarks were made in english angl 11 ish and interpreted inter red into the native n language other speeches were made by prominent cherokee I 1 men the y of dedicatory prayer and delivery keys followed then a speech by united states in indian d ia n agent ben anett u tt the addresses were mostly upon ou the history of the cherokee I 1 udd indians lans the recounting of the manner in which they had progressed from their savage condition f four 0 centuries antu ries ago to their present standard of civilization through poverty misfortune and war t the e bright prospect which appeared to be in future judging by the event which had brought the people together and the advantages which the enjoyed above the bulk of indians indiana in erecting and establishing such institutions of learning while a nominal fee is to be charged those who attend chesem the seminary and are capable of paying their tuition there are also provisions made for the education of those whose parents are unable to pay for the training of their children there being an opportunity for fifty of this class to obtain a three years course then fifty others can be provided for the seminary opens in september with suitable professors engaged in each department for properly conducting the institution and the faculty of teachers to be employed exhibits the extent and nature of the broad field which these indians desire to open in their midst the gramme pro me of the day concluded with a dinner consisting of barbecued beef and bread free to all who wished to partake then the doors of the seminary were thrown open and the public permitted to view the interior thus thas ended an interesting and eventful oe occurrence currence in the history of the cherokee nation an item worthy of mention was the singing of twelve cherokee boys in their own language and in fact the indians have hate as a class a remarkable taste and ability to sing we could not but notice a remark of one of the orators who stated that the origin of the american indians and their early mato history were mysteries to ar ail people to 0 many of themselves this may appear true for little do they know as yet that there has been for years in the hands of the mormon people ft a full and complete record of whom the indians are where they came from and what their future is destined to be and while now many r reject act that inspired record and despise s I 1 those who proclaim its truth future years e will unveil their eyes and rev reveal to them the reason of their former darkness and sufferings er I 1 and how the curse
