governorship another has now dow been made by the resignation of cammi commissioner loner carlton A change in the utah commission has been expected eaver ever since the inauguration of the republican president the law requires that both political parties shall be represented in that body there are at present three democrats in the bowd board previous to the cleveland administration it conte contained Aued three republicans it was generally conceded that there would be at least ong one removal in order to make a republican Republic on majority again and it was also thought that judge carlton cariton would be the victim of party exigency it was known that ladiana indiana po politicians liticia ns were pressing for the appointment of an indiana man also that othet othel republican office seekers were anxious for the place because of its fat salary and limited labors and judge carlton cariton was the oldest member of the commission and therefore the most likely one to go it is also known that strong efforts effort have been made to prejudice the president dent against commissioner cariton because he would not WW wear the collar of the clique that aims to aa control the territory and has been firm in resisting unlawful measures and oppressive opp e ss ive propositions apropo a it 1 0 no d designed es g ded to deprive the majority here hereof of uw doubted rights for this he has been assailed in that brutal and i blackguard sty lein which the organ U of slander usually expresses its ion of those who dissent from its ite policy and will not cringe to its ite libelous lash but so far as W WID know he has never swerved on this account from what he conceived to be his duty there has been nothing in the of facial course of commissioner carl j ton which can be construed into j favor favoring lug the mormons cormons Mor mons we hava had occasion to criticize many things done by the commission in which he took an active part but his bis legal and judicial experience has baa saved the commission on several occasions from serious blunders SO and his dissent from some improprieties of the majority has appeared mow MOM j than once in print and while we have disagreed with him in sorn things we have not regarded judge carlton cariton as a bitter nor unreasonable unreason ablO J antagonist but rather as disi disposed nosed to t be fair and just while occupying occupy n 9 es 00 j opposite ground from our f point of view we are gratified to know that the attempts which have been made to injure commissioner carlton cariton with the former and the present addilu have signally failed sa official course couise has not been condemned by the national authorities nor has any exception excel Alon been takeo thereto neither have the perso persona 1 friendly relations between alto and president harrison beell in the least disturbed our information on these points is dell j nite and reliable party necessity j and party policy have been all the
