remember member Ko now irow the accident occurred when so recovered con IT D forrest of this city has received cc ived a topeka state slate journal giving an all account ot of an accident to george 11 ward formerly a prominent mission worker in the first baptist church ot of this city ward left salt take lake last june ile he was employed at the topeka foundry and roomed at lit west tenth street in that city the accident may end totally but dr Men ringer who attended ward says nays it Is yet impossible to tell whether or not the man will recover co ier besides being frightfully burned about the hands and face he inhaled the smoke e and names and this makes the result ot of his bis injuries uncertain no one Is able to till how the fire originated but it Is supposed to have been caused by the explosion of tho the lamp in wards room ir ward Is very devout and he has been la the habit of arising early on sunday mornings to study his hie bible before breakfast one of the other roomers who passed his door tit at 6 last laet sunday morning saw gaw weird ward sitting by the table reading his he had been in his room but a short time when he saw names flames bursting from the win windows dowis in wards room the alarm was immediately given and when tho the fire department arrived tho the members found it impossible to go up tho stairway on account count of the smoke emoke and boat beat they broke into the tha upper windows and soon had the fire in tho room extinguished A search tor for ward was then made said and ho he was found on the loor floor of an adjoining room in a semiconscious semi conscious condition with ills his face burned to a blister lie was carried d downstairs and revived but N waa as unable to tell how the fire originated iio ho sold said lip lie remembered I 1 going into the room where he wits was found and breaking out el a window windo with his elbow because he felt that he would die unless ho he got air but lie he remembered nothing noth ln more it Is supposed that the lamp which was sitting on the table near ward exploded and the force of the explosion stunned him but left him able to leave the room the condition of the tha room indicates that the tha fire originated from oil for though the fire department ment was thre there in a few minutes after the alarm was given everything in the tha room wal vas destroyed miss brown who lives in the house said bald 11 my dy opinion la Is that the ire fire was caused by the explosion of the lamp though mr ward does not know how the fire originated ile he was probably stunned by the explosion and may have been struck by the lamp mr ward always gets up early on I 1 sunday morning to read his big bible and that was what lie he was doloff when the inre alre started it must have been buro burn lne ing quite a while before it was discovered because the whole interior of tho room Is burned out it Is ing how mr ward succeeded in getting out ot of the room I 1 suppo supposed ged he was still in the room when the fire de department p art arrived I 1 told tod them that there here was a man in the room 1 I tried twice to get up the stairs but the smoke rind and heat was so intense that I 1 was nearly suffocated two or three others tried to get up but tailed failed and the threaten had to break into the windows ivIn dows on the second noor floor when sir mr ward was found by the he was lying at lull full length on the floor in front 0 of a window in another room lie he was not able to speak the window showed that lie he had broken it and he said eald afterward that he be broke it with his elbow to get air before lie he was wars entirely overcome the injured man Is conscious this morning and Is suffering less but no one except the physician Is allowed allowed to see him ills hla face Is literally cooked rind and the skin la is entirely destroyed in many places it appears aa it if the burning oil spattered over his faco when the explosion occurred A strange thing thine about the fire Is that ward a clothing were not burned nor were his eyes injured ills hair was scorched but not badly and the only injuries besides the internal burns are ara on III his 3 face and hands the escape ot of tho the man from tho the burning room Is little short ot of miraculous stunned as he was by the force ot of the explosion he was probably revived by tile pain of his injuries to crawl from the room the door of the room happened to be open and this enabled him to escape he must have lain on the floor of the room for some time while his face was blistering by tho the heat ward war d Is about 30 years old and un rn mairley the house in which the tire occurred seems to be fated three times limes within a year it has leen damaged by fire the building Is owned by theod theodore e currau curran and Is insured tho the dit damage iria ago tills this time Is not more than |
