CIRCUIT TRAINING The stuff of life is made of the feeling we get when watching a puppy frolic or seeing a loved one die, or a babys first steps, or having our heart broken by a first love, or hitting a home run. Its the stuff that RACQUET BALL Madison Avenue hits on when making telephone commercials and selling flowers and Hallmark cards. It is emotion, whether evinced by a direct event or vicariously which are a through what we have come to call the humanities, validating seal of our passions and our vitality. And the humanities encompass all that expresses our feelings. Education teaches that its the arts that crystalize those feelings. We have the ability to feel through poetry, or art or drama or dance or film or even through Roseanne Arnold. And, truly, we have the means to feel through music, even rock n roll. So whether its plaintive or exciting jazz, or a classic, or even Axl Rose crying about his departed drummer with words by Bob Dylan, if we have humanity, we can be touched. And we can build our humanity. Afterall, any who have taken a humanities class from Jim Harrison to see tears course down his cheeks as he teaches must be aware that we most assuredly can celebrate our humanity through the arts, if not through our own explicit experiences. Not only are there plenty of messages to be absorbed, but those who practice the art form have a lot to give as well. In fact, there have been a few rock n rollers who have influenced our world in profound and lasting ways. Beyond changing the direction of music, some have truly changed the way people think, and not all have done it solely via dynamism, but some have combined their charisma with true intellect. When listing such contributors, it seems at times one must die to reach the zenith of his or her influence. For instance, John Lennon is much more the accepted genius in death than he was in life. Jim Morrison, on the other hand, remains as much a second-rat- e poet on the other side as he was while a live king of lizards. While I cant recall anyone ever proclaiming the deceased Janis Joplin to be real bright, I came across a quote from her the other day that I find to be brilliant in its own way, although I cant subscribe to it as an eternal truth. Being an intellectual creates a lot of questions and no answers, she said. You can fill your life up with ideas and still go home lonely. All you really have that matters are feelings. I bring till this up because it illustrates a point dear to me: Emotions are what elevate us from the computers that are increasingly encroaching on our domain and that threaten to insinuate themselves far beyond their basic use. And, by extension, it reminds me of something that is all too seldom dealt with in higher education in this country: A college education should provide more value than teaching one to think and how to assimilate and express ideas. It should do more than to prepare one to function in the workplace. At full power, a college education should also refine and strengthen our humanity. And our humanity dictates that we recognize that humanity and, indeed, embrace it. I am reminded that one of the most enduring catchwords to parallel the rock n roll culture is cool. James Dean was cool, Arthur Fonzarelli was cool. The word was associated with stocism, with keeping emotions in check, with not smiling, not laughing, not frowning, not crying. In short, denying ones humanity. The connotation has evolved somewhat, but is still related to that quality of not becoming too indebted to ones passions. In fact, its used to describe even Axl Rose who, though he may be Satan incarnate, at least shows emotion. To be sure, anything can be carried to extreme and Axls a pretty fine example of that but in the final analysis, that we can revel in our lives, in our flesh and our blood and our senses, is truly what makes "WIN with the V AEROBICS New Universal Super Circuit Student Special 00 $69. per Quarter.
