Annual WRITER'S LEAGUE With the peak season for water consumption now on us, it would be well for everyone to give a thought to water conservation. Already June, July, and August are top months for use of water. this figure approximately 2Vj million gallons are being used daily and to Vaughn will climb steadily during the next few months, according Jeffs, Utilities Operation Section, Installation. Water for Hill AFB comes from six deep wells located on the base and the Hill Water System Annex (Military Springs). While the water supply at the present time is adequate it is still important to keep on eye on conservation of our utilities. Squandering of water is costly, foolish and unforgiveable. In addition to conservation of utilities, wise use of water saves Uncle Sam money. Mr. Jeffs reported that every gallon of water costs because it all has to be pumped and chemically treated. . So, especially during summer months, be a thrifty user of water. Ever wondeY what would happen if the motors stopped Working at Hill AFB? Well, we'd probably close up shop because in the winter all the furnaces and heating plants would stop working. In the summer, the air conditioning units and farts would stop functioning. But, there's a group of men in Installations who see that the 3,633 motors at Hill AFB run smoothly and perform their required functions. They are the men in Preventive Motor. Maintenance. These fellows travel around the base in a mobile work shop cleaning, lubricating, and repairing motors. Their motto is "Find It and Fix It" and they check every motor at i;he base every sixty days. Two motor repairman Cabove) check over a steam pit motor (left to right) Lloyd A. Pope and Oscar T. Tracy. HEALTH HINT Salute To The CAA Have You Overlooked Polio Protection? On June the Civil Aeronautics Administration celebrates its Twentieth Anniversary of service to the American people. The measure of the CAA's accomplishments in making and keeping the aircraft and the crowded airways of the nation safe during these twenty years can best be measured by noting that in 1938, the year the Civil Aeronautics Administration came into existence, there were more airline accidents and passenger fatalities in the 480 million pas senger miles flown than there were in the 25.5 billion passenger miles flown in the year just ended. We also think it is worth noting that the air traveler of 1938 found that in many cases his life insurance was invalid for air travel. Today the air traveler can buy large amounts of additional trip life insurance anytime he takes a scheduled air flight. Flying today is one of the safest methods of transportation in existence, much safer in fact than driving the family car. The next twenty years will undoubtedly dwarf the past twenty in technical advancements and volume of air traffic. We are gratified to know that the CAA is already moving with vigor into the jet age, ana planning for the space age to come. To all the devoted employees oi this vigorous young agency we say "well done". 23rd Acrrvi-SM- vi 1, i X Motor In Your Community U Tune-u- p Specialist HAROLD thi risixvi Insurance CChmpany o Good to The New York Uf Agent $150.
