Unfortunately many of these encounters are fatal to the graceful creatures and can also cause significant damage to you and your vehicle. Traditional migrations have brought deer to the foothills during the coldest months, where winter forage has been available, but recent developments now cover these critical areas, leaving the stressed animals to be chased by dogs and unhappy ornamental shrub owners. As they seek refuge and food they often travel through high traffic areas, where vehicles also take their toll. The Division of Wildlife Resources urges motorists to watch for deer and elk at the sides of roads, to slow down, and give the animals plenty of room. Any collision should be properly reported to the public safety dispatcher (91D, which can call officers to the scene to dispose of the animal and file an incident report. Deer and elk are especially active at dawn, dusk and at night. That makes them especially vulnerable to highway mortality. According to the Utah Department of Transportation. more than 2,000 animalvehicle accidents are reported each year, which result in more than $1,250 in damage to the automobile.
