Show SIDEJINES1 Baseball card-collecting is popular Blaine Bringhurst Sports Editor - Olympic Games again jeopardized by politics The Olympic Games, once a symbol of international friendship, are faced with turmoil, again. Seoul, South Korea, is the site picked by the International Olympic Committee to host the 1988 games. Unfortunately, Seoul is having political problems that may jeopardize the upcoming games. The problems facing the South Korean government may be resolved in time for a successful Olympics to take place. On the other hand, they might not be. Rioting South Korean students are among the problems facing the South Korean government . The students want to attain open elections, something the government does not want to allow. South Korea's political problems worry both the Olympic committee and the athletes. Many of the athletes feel that if South Korea's political problems are not resolved, the games should be relocated or cancelled. The Olympic committee does not want to relocate the games since South Korea has spent millions of dollars preparing for their chance to host the games. However, if problems continue, the committee will be forced to relocate the games. If the committee does not act quickly enough and the games are ruined, it will not be the first time the games have taken a back seat to politics. The games have been beset with problems since 1980. That year, the United .States boycotted the Moscow Olympics because of the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. Despite the U.S. boycott the games were -held. However, the Olympics were not as competitive as they should have been because of the U.S.'s absence. In 1984 the Soviet Union retaliated by boycotting the games held in Los Angeles. Once again the games were held anyway, and once again they were subpar. It is unfortunate that the leaders of all countries cannot pull together and resolve all of our problems so that such a great event as the Olympic Games can take place without incident. The competitive spirit that comes from the Olympics is unmatched by any other international sporting event. The Olympic tradition that brings out patriotism from both athletes and fans cannot be obtained without all countries participating. What American does not remember the U.S. hockey team's great upset of the U.S.S.R.'s powerhouse team at the 1976 Olympics? This was attained because all the countries competed in a peaceful yet highly competitive manner. Hopefully, everything will be worked out and the world will be able to enjoy its first nonpolitical Olympic Games in 12 years. Blaine Bringhurst Sports Editor (Editor's note: this is the first part of a two part series dealing with baseball card collecting) Move over stamp collectors, baseball card collecting is becoming the new fad. A new hobby has hit Americans and it continues to grow. It is called baseball card collecting and it is enjoyed by baseball fans from all generations. Baseball card conventions are sprouting up all over the United States with former stars like Hank Aaron making guest appearances. Thousands of collectors come looking for those difficult to find cards. Some have small collections, some extensive collections, but no matter the size of thier collection everyone is trying to make it grow. So why all of a sudden the big fuss about baseball cards? After all they have been around for more than fifty years. Perhaps their popularity is growing becasue the popularity of baseball itself is growing. And when. your set is finally complete, it is something to be proud of and to admire. I have had the privilege of completing many sets. My extensive collection of baseball cards begins in the year 1956. That year the New York Yankees (who else?) were World Champions and Mickey Mantle won the triple crown. The Mantle card is rare and valuable, I am lucky enough to own one of them. There are many different types of baseball cards. The player cards show the players and their complete major league statistics. There are also a wide variety of special cards. Some show the records that were broken during the year they were issued, there are cards that remember famous moments in baseball history and their are the ever popular rookie cards. There are cards that summarize the League Championship Series and cards that highlight the World Series. There are cards that show the league leaders in all of the major statistics. There are even cards that show the All-Stars. By looking through the cards, one can almost relive an entire season. The cards can tell you who was hot and who was not.
