tradition Traditions of high scholarship achievement a school w where ere although small has always provided the very best of instruction fine n e capable capable capable cap cap- able teachers plenty of instructional instructional instructional mat materials e ria 1 s dedicated administration and Boards of Education who in representing the people of our community have complied with their wishes to provide the finest in education education education tion for the students who pass through these halls As a result of this dedication dedication dedica tion 10 of our class are making plans to further our education at various colleges technical schools and We hope you our parents parents parents par par- and teachers will consider this our Thanks to You for willing to us a fine tradition for scholastic achievement at Park High There are many other traditions traditions traditions at Park High As red and and white clad cheerleaders and pep club girls pause to sing Park High at the half hall time of ofa ofa ofa a basketball game as beautiful ful junior girls and handsome junior boys promenade for proud parents as Homecoming pep rally signals a football season and even as Seniors leave first from an assemble we see our traditions It It seems appropriate therefore therefore therefore there there- fore that a few minutes be de devoted devoted devoted de- de voted to reminiscing about Our Dear Old Park High Our present High School building opened its doors to students students students stu stu- dents 41 years ago in 1927 the lor formal mal opening exercises were held F Feb b. b 16 1928 There was a program program herE herf in the auditorium and dancing that night in the gym During the next few years Park High students were very busy gaining honors for themselves themselves themselves them them- selves and their school in many fields One of our girls was a finalist in the National Spelling Contest One of the boys won the Regional Oratory contest The first yearbook the Sil- Sil was published and recorded the production of an Opera The Belle of Bagdad Bagdad- and a play Through The band started to win for itself itsell the first of many State and National honors The first school newspaper was published in 1938 The big news that September was the setting up of 3 a Board of Control Control Control Con Con- which consisted of class presidents and school officers The Citizenship Club Dramatics Dramatics Dramatics Drama Drama- tics Class the Home Economics Club and a Journalism Class promised to insure their members members members mem mem- bers a a good time as well as some very educational exper exper- The Pep Club elected their members and the football season promised to be real tough The opponents were Judge North Summit Wasatch and Morgan The name of the Yearbook was changed to Bonanza in 1942 which means a rich vein of ore Dancing was the big thing in those years Our parents may remember dancing to Junior Proms entitled The Moon of Memory Lane Youre You re the Only Star Starin Starin Starin in My Blue Heaven Over the Rainbow and II Apple Blossom Blossom Blossom Blos Blos- som Time You our parents were no different than we are today You were just as full of life Ufe and eager to learn but also eager to have fun and play pranks One t teacher e a c h e r was surprised surprised surprised sur sur- one day to see smoke curling out of the ink well of one of his illustrious students student's desks Meanwhile the student was frantically trying to put putout putout putout out the fire he had started in inthe inthe inthe the bottom of the desk not consi considering considering con con- si that the blank ink well provided an excell excellent nt chimney One of the proudest traditions traditions traditions at Park High in years gone by was our High School Band Starting in the through the this band brought Regional state and National National National Na Na- honors to our school We were recognized throughout the state as an outstanding High School band For 20 years this band received first ratings in Regional and National Contests In 1939 the band was invited to perform at the opening session session session ses ses- sion of the Utah Education Association Association Association As As- Meeting in the Salt Lake Tabernacle In 1950 the band received a great honor when they traveled to San Francisco Francisco Francisco Fran Fran- cisco to play at the half time activities of the West East-West Shrine game A former Salt Laker said the game gam was good but the band was better He said young musicians stole the s show ow and everyone in his section of the stands agreed with him The basketball team of 1947 had a very successful year ending ending ending end end- ing with their going to the State Class B Tournament Our football football football foot foot- ball team played Bingham High for Class B finals in 1942 We remember our football team capturing the 1961 Region 6 Football Championship Many students have passed through these halls and have gone on to become doctors dentists 1 lawyers a wy e r s priests teachers politicians and businessmen businessmen businessmen busi busi- in every walk of life Ufe Many boys have served in the armed forces of our Country Some dying on the battlefields of World War I World War n II The Korean War and the Viet VietNam VietNam VietNam Nam war Many of our own parents were Park High graduates Proud mot mothers her s were homecoming homecoming homecoming home home- coming Queens and fathers were once football captains and now they leave to us their rich storehouse storehouse storehouse store store- house of knowledge and Not only have we learned well to read and write but in instilled in- in stilled in our hearts is an un unbiased unbiased unbiased un- un biased tolerant view towards people no matter what their station in life no matter what color their skin happens to be Even more important is a de desire desire desire de- de sire instilled in us to better ourselves and our children just justas as our parents desired to give us more than they had We seem to hear you say to us usI I Dare You young man you who come from a home of poverty I dare you to have havethe havethe havethe the qualities of a Lincoln I I dare You heir of wealth and proud ancestry with your gene generations rations of w worthy 0 r thy stock your traditions of leadership I dare yo you you to achieve something something something some some- thing that will make the future point to you with even more pride than the present is pointing pointing pointing point point- ing to those who have gone be before before before be- be fore you I I dare dara you young mother to make your life a masterpiece upon which that little family of yours can build Strong women bring forth strong menI menI men I 1 dare you debutante to be boa a queen Make life obey you not you it It It is only a shallow dare to todo todo todo do the foolish things I dare you to do the uplifting courageous courageous things I 1 dare You young executive to shoulder more responsibility joyously to launch out into the deep to build magnificently I Dare You young author to win the Nobel Prize I I 1 Dare You young research researcher er to become a Microbe Hunter I I Dare You boy on the farm to become a Master Farmer A Hunger Fighter I I Dare You man of affairs to h have a v e a Magnificent years of your life Ufe I Dare You who think life is humdrum to start a fight I dare you who are weak to be strong you who are dull to be sparkling you who are slaves to be kings I I Dare You to share with others the fruits of your dar dar- ing Catch a passion for helping others and a richer life Ufe will come back to your youl It It is up to us then the Class of 1968 to Build it well whatever you
